Alright, this is the guitar lesson for Steppenwolf's Magic Carpet Ride, the easy way and the correct way.
Starting off, have your guitar in standard E tuning.
Use your tuner to get there, make sure it's in the proper tuning.
[C] Alright, and the chords you want to know are the D major [D] bar chord, [G] C major bar [C] chord,
[B] alright, and the G major bar [G] chord.
Alright, [C] 5th and 7th fret, [G] 3rd and 5th fret, and 3rd and 5th fret again for that G.
[C] Okay, and so the main [Gb] riff of the song goes like this, I'll play it very slow for you,
[D] okay?
[G] [D] [C]
Alright, sounds pretty familiar?
So [Gb] that whole song is that [C] riff over and over and over again.
There's a couple [Em] parts where it gets a little bit funky, the instrumentals come in, you
get [Gb] your keyboard, organ, stuff like that, but for the most part, [C] that's the entire song,
okay?
So [G] let's talk about what I was doing there, alright?
So let's start with the D, okay, that's the first chord, so [Gb] we go [D] down, down, [E]
mute, on
that [G] third down strum, [D] so down, down, [E] [C] alright, now we go to the C, and we strum up, down,
alright, [G] and then two down strums on G, alright?
[D] So [C] okay, [G] [C]
[Gb] not bad.
So that's the first [Db] half of that [B] riff.
The second part of that riff goes like [D] this, [C] [G]
okay?
So the first [D] part,
[C] [G] going [D] into the second part, [C] [G]
[Em] alright?
So that second part [Gb] starts with a down up, it's just a mute, [Db] I'm putting my fingers in
the strings but I'm not pushing down on the frets, I'm just muting them, so I'm not holding
any tension on [B] those strings, I'm just touching the strings, which can be something like [C] that.
So I go down up, and then I go back to my D, [D]
[E] two down [D] strums, [Em] mute, alright, [A] and then
on the [C] up strum, I'm on that C, [D] okay, so, [C]
[G] and then the rest are mutes.
[C] [Em]
So down up, down up, muting, alright, [B] with my fingers on the strings [N] but not pushing
down on the frets, [C] so up, [E] down up, [C] down up, then G twice, down [G] strums.
Alright, so, [D]
[D] [C]
[G] [Fm] that's it.
That's [B] the majority of the song.
[Ab]
Please rewind, it's going to take you a couple times to get that, [A] just rewind and watch me
play it when I play it slow and just keep on practicing, okay?
It's going to take a couple of times to go through.
The other part of the song, there's two kind of chord shapes that he makes, and this is
when the song kind of gets [Ab] all trippy and weird, [G] that's the,
[B]
[Bm]
[Em]
[G] okay, [E] so you probably remember
that [C] part of the song, it's just when the song goes off onto a weird tangent and I don't
know if, you know, why it does that, but it's just, I guess, the different part of the song.
So how I do [B] that is I'm barring on the fifth fret these first four [A] strings, the E, the
B, the G, and the D, okay, and I'm [Bm] putting my middle finger on the sixth fret B string,
and my ring finger is going to [A] go on the seventh fret [B] G string, okay?
My pinky is going to, when I first strum this [Bb] chord, my pinky is going to be on, and my
pinky is going to be on the eighth [Ab] fret B string, and then I [G] take it off, okay?
So I'm going,
[Dm] [A] [Dm]
[Gm] [Dm] [G]
[Dm] [G]
[G] alright, so see what I'm doing?
[Dm] Just taking my pinky and putting it [Ab] on and off, okay?
The strumming [A] pattern for that is, I'll [G] do it really slow,
[Dm]
[G]
[Dm]
okay?
[Bb] The same thing over and over again, and then it goes [B] down to the second fret, okay?
[Bb] So you move that same shape all the way down to the second fret, and [B] you do the same exact
thing, alright, [Ab] in the [B] second position, okay?
So that's
[Bm] [B]
And that's when all the instruments come [Ab] in, it gets all trippy and stuff like that.
So I'll go over the strumming pattern for this part, it's the same thing as up here,
but I'll show you down here, okay, and I'll do it [B] very slow.
[Bm] [B]
[Bm]
[Bm]
[E]
[Bm]
Okay?
[G] And that's it!
That [N] was the whole song, Steppenwolf's Magic Carpet Ride.

Take care!
The other part of the song, there's two kind of chord shapes that he makes, and this is
when the song kind of gets [Ab] all trippy and weird, [G] that's the,
[B]
[Bm]
[Em]
[G] okay, [E] so you probably remember
that [C] part of the song, it's just when the song goes off onto a weird tangent and I don't

and my ring finger is going to [A] go on the seventh fret [B] G string, okay?
