These days I tend to play the Firth of Fith solo pretty much every gig because it's really my best known electric solo and arguably Genesis' most famous electric guitar solo.
So it was a rare moment where I got a look in for a continuous three minutes or so on Genesis' album in those days, selling by the pound.
I still love this solo.
In those days I used to have to stand in front of the speaker cabinet to try and get feedback, but now of course with these Fernandes guitars that have got sustainer pickups in, you can get that at a very low level.
At conversational level you can get sustain [D] over it like that.

don't mind if an album is overly long.
In those days of course we were coming up with ridiculously long sides that you couldn't really comfortably cut onto vinyl.
But luckily we had acoustic sections so it didn't chew into the vinyl that much.
Your bass frequencies needed deeper grooves in old technology, in old speak.
But sometimes we'd stick half an hour on, whereas most people to get optimum bass level at that time, it was reckoned that the optimum should be about 18 minutes a side.
But that gives you a very short album.
The 70s is full of short albums but sometimes very long sides from Genesis.
I didn't mind that.
I didn't mind long form stuff.
It gives everyone a chance to develop and play.
Even when we did Supper's Ready I thought, this great long thing, practically 30 minutes long, the game's up, no one's going to like it.
We whittled ourselves into insignificance but actually we incorporated everyone's bits instead of editing them with this long form pop or rock style and fans loved it.
