Steve Lukather & Larry Carlton - LIVE 1/2 chords
Start Jamming...
Hey, bro.
How are you?
Yeah, good, buddy.
[Em] Hey, all our friends are here.
[G] We're glad you're here.
So we have to do soundcheck.
[N] Yes, Mike, can you do a soundcheck?
I met Steve Lukather when he was 17 or 18 years old, I believe.
Would have been 1976, something like that.
And there was one evening when I needed an overdub on one of my songs called Nightcrawler,
and Steve was hanging out at the house, and he said,
Ah, I'll do it for you then.
So we've known each other a long time.
I got hip to Larry when he was playing the Steely Dan albums, the Crusaders records.
I started buying records just because he was on it.
When I heard him fuse the bebop stuff with the rock sound, I said,
I want to be Larry [Em] Carlton.
I want to be him.
[D] [F]
[Em] [E]
[N] [G] So I'm basically a rock guy [G#] that likes jazz.
I can play through chord changes, I know how to do that,
but not in a traditional bebop sense.
It's really hard to articulate where the jazz and the rock meets.
It's really hard, because I just play what I play.
I play like me.
I'm listening to a lot of Coltrane and models right now,
all the acoustic stuff, like Cool Jazz Era, you know,
like late 50s, early 60s stuff,
Four and More, you know, Coltrane, Plays the Blues, all that stuff.
Just to kind of, it goes in, you know,
and then it manifests itself in a different way.
Like, I subconsciously, it just comes out in my playing.
Especially in this particular gig with Larry, I'm allowed to stretch out.
It's all about improvisation.
It's not about structured, okay, let's go out and do the show,
because there's lights, and it's not a whole big deal.
This is more intimate and more, every night's different.
It's a new [A] adventure, if you will.
