Hi, it's Mr.
Knuckles Music Lessons and today we're going to play Sunshine by a band called Nazareth.
I don't know if they're still around, but they're a great old 70s band and this is a great nice easy acoustic song for beginners.
Nice little love song.
You need three four chords actually you need D.
So D again for those of you who are just beginning, D is middle finger on the first string at the second fret.
First finger on the third string at the second fret and your ring finger on the second string at the third fret.
You don't play the top string so you can wrap your thumb over and just mute it out.
So it sounds like that.
Your chord should sound like this if you play each [A] string at a time.
[D] Once again, [N] if you get things like this
then you're either not pushing hard enough or you're touching strings you shouldn't touch.
Another little tip is to try and move your fingers closer to the frets that they're pushing at.
So third fret would be here instead of here, right?
Second fret would be here instead of back here.
All [D] right, that's a D.
So the G that you're gonna play with this one is going to you're gonna keep your
ring finger on the second string the third fret for D and for G.
[G] G looks like this.
This finger the ring finger stays in the same spot.
You put your pinky on the bottom string at the third.
Middle finger goes up to the top string at the third and
first finger plays the fifth string at the second fret.
Sounds like [F] that.
Back and forth from D to G
keeps this finger in the same spot and [G] you can use it like a pivot.
[D] It's nice and easy to go back and forth [D] which we're gonna be doing a lot in this song.
Another chord you're gonna need is A.
Second string, third string, fourth string.
[A] At the second fret you can play it like this.
You [G#m] can play it.
I play it like just like a D.
I take my D and just keep the same formation moving over.
[F] All right.
It's kind of a hard chord to play because your fingers are all jumbled up on each other because they're playing [F] such
[A] strings that are close together.
[E] Anyways, you also needed an E.
Third string at the first fret and fourth and fifth string at the second fret.
You can play this one like this or like this.
Doesn't matter.
Okay, you only need that once in a while.
There's another little thing in this song
and I'm not playing it exactly the way it's probably played on the album or the CD but
just for practice purposes, you're gonna need to play a little riff.
It's [G] just nice and easy.
Top string, third fret,
[F#] second fret,
[E] open,
one note at a time and back [D] to the D chord.
All right, [E] practice that a little bit before we start so that you know how to do it when we get there.
All right, here we go.
Sunshine by Nazareth.
[D#] Just one strum at a time on D to start.
[A] [D]
Actually, there's the odd double strum here and there but don't worry about it.
Just do one strum at a time.
Okay, here's G as in goat.
[G] Back to D as in [D] dog.
[G] Goat.
Dog.
[D]
And here's A right [A] here.
Top string [G] thing, third fret, [E] second fret, open and [D] D chord.
[G] Goat.
Dog.
[D]
[G] Goat.
Dog.
[D]
Here's the A chord right [A] here.
Top string, [F#] third fret, second fret,
open and [D] D chord.
[G] Goat.
Back to dog.
[D]
[G] Goat.
[D] Dog.
Here's A.
[A] Top string, third fret, second fret, open and [D] dog.
Okay, we're going to change things up a little bit.
You're going to go to A right here.
[A] A chord.
Back to D.
[D] Back to [A] A.
D [D] as in dog.
[B] A [A] again.
Okay, here's the elephant chord.
[E] E as in elephant.
Okay, just stop playing for a sec.
[A] Get ready to play a D.
Let the drums play out a little bit.
Here we go.
[D] D.
D. Goat.
[G] Dog.
[D]
Goat.
[G] Dog.
[D]
A.
[A] Top string, third fret, second fret, open and dog.
[D] Okay, so the song changes around and goes into a solo that is all weird and different.
So there's no sense trying to play it.
So that's it.
Just a great song to practice your D to your G.
Back and [F] forth.
It will get boring very quickly as you can imagine.
This is the first song I teach my class at school and
they're bored with it by about the first month in.
So great song to practice, but
