_ _ [C#] _ _ _ [A] _ This is my greatest hit
singular _ _ _
_ [E] _ _ [B] _ _ _ [E] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ You know when we were taught Mike and I were talking a little bit earlier about how this song
This song is called wide open spaces and it's a song that the Dixie Chicks put on their first
_ National release they had other albums out as kind of a different incarnation
but this was their first one that was on a late on Sony and
_ a _ _
_ Friend of Texas Lloyd Maynes who's a great producer here and
_ instrumentalist he plays everything and
he was producing _ an album for a band that I was in called the groupies and
_ this was one of the demos that we sent him to see if he wanted to come and produce our band and
_ _ _ _ His daughter at the [E] time
Natalie his daughter Natalie at the time _
She's her dad he she you know is that was wrong his daughter Natalie
_ _ _ Had just dropped out of school to start singing with the the other two chicks Emily and Marty and
_ so this was a perfect storm of this the song a good song hitting a great band at the exact right moment and
I've since learned then you know they they started performing this song and so then when Sony _
Started kind of grooming them for their label
This was a song that they
took with them and they'd already been playing it live and they had a rapport with it and they had you know they had a
fan base that already supported the song and
_ and
_ That's the way I thought it always worked
_ And it just doesn't work like that all the time.
I've learned since then _ _ _ _
But this has been you know I said it's Mike this was the cornerstone of my career
_ Back before I had a career
And it was just a hobby and a good excuse to not go to chemistry class in the morning
I was going to school in Missoula, Montana.
I was visiting my folks for my first [Bm] Christmas home.
I believe
Because I had a meal plan.
I thought I knew everything and so my parents said
You know what would you do last night, honey?
You didn't get home till this 4 in the morning, and I said
_ How dare [E] you?
I'm an adult _ _ _
And
so I
Furiously scribbled these lyrics in a notebook went back up to school
totally forgot out because I wasn't really writing songs really at that time is I'd maybe written a dozen and
_ I get this care package in the mail from my mother that has a bunch of you know stuff that I'd left at home you know
_ Valuable treasures ice blue eyeshadow that I used to wear in a sixth grade
_ _ guitar picks and
_ My Chia pet and _
_ My poster of Scott Baio that I practiced kissing on
_ _ _ _ _ and
A notebook with these lyrics in it and so I always marvel at the perfect irony
Which is this big I can do it myself song back off.
I need room to grow
My mom had to send it to me in a care package _ _
[A] _ _ [E] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [B] _ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _
_ Now my mom doesn't ever throw away anything with my handwriting on it
_ _ She'd be like Susan I found this note that says your eye doctor called call back after four
I thought it might have been a lyric or something _ _ _ _
Who [A] doesn't know what I'm [E] talking about _ _
_ Who's never [A] left home [E] who's never struck out?
To [A] find a dream and a life of their [B] own
_ _ _ _ [A] place in the clouds [B] a
foundation [E] of stone _
Many precede and many will follow a
_ _ Young girl's dream no longer hollow
_ [A] It takes the shape of a place [E] out west
_ _ [A] What it holds for her she hasn't [B] yet
_ [E] She needs wide [F#m] open
[A] _ spaces
[B] _ _ [E] _ _ [F#] room to make her [A] big mistakes
_ _ [E] She needs [F#m] new
_ [A] Faces she [B] knows the [E] high stakes [F#m] _ _ [A] _ _ _
_ [B] _ _ [E] she traveled this road as a child
_ _ _ _ Wide-eyed [A] and grinning she [E] never tired
_ But now [A] she won't be coming back with the [E] rest _
_ If these [A] are life lessons, she'll [B] take this test
She _ [E] needs [F#m] wide [A] open spaces
[B] _ _
_ _ Room to make [A] her big mistakes
_ [B] _ _ She needs [F#m] new
_ [A] Faces she [C#] knows the [E] high stakes [F#m] _ _ [A] _ _ _ _ [B] _
_ _ _ [E] so you've probably heard this story already some of you but
_ _ Jana gave me this CD and it was a copy of the Dixie chicks singing wide open spaces with James [A] Taylor
I'm [E] a big James Taylor fan so uh
My first [A] impulse was to call [E] my parents and bask in the glow of their love
[B] _ So I [A] called home.
I said dad.
[E] You'll never get my dad answers the phone.
[B] So dad
You'll never guess what I'm listening to right [A] now.
He said what's that [E] Susan?
_ Said I'm listening to the Dixie chicks sing wide open [A] spaces with James [E] Taylor
_ _ Awkward silence on the other end of the phone [A] and that's when I realized [E] my dad has no idea who James Taylor is I
_ _ _ [A] _ [E] _ Said come on dad.
You don't know who James Taylor is
[A] He said I know who James [E] Taylor is he's that football player.
Oh
_ Devastated [A] you have to disappoint [E] my father and say no dad James Taylor's not a football player
He said well not [A] anymore Susan of [E] course not he's been retired for years.
_ _ _ _ [A] _ _ [E] I said, I love you dad
Will you have [A] mom call me when she gets [B] back? _
[E] _ _ _ _ _ _ Did she packs her [A] things she feels [E] she left something out _ her friends her family her doll in this house
She turns [A] around to find her old room [E] bear
_ _ _ Looks [A] at the U-Haul.
It has [B] to fit [E] in there _ _ _ _ _ _ her dad yells check the oil
_ _ Monsters [A] out the window.
She [E] says I'm leaving my girl
_ [A] She said it did not seem like _ _ [E] _ _
that when she [A] stood there and watched her own _ _
[B] _ _ _ She [E] needed _ _
[F#m] _ _ [A] _ Spaces
_ [B] _ _
_ Room to [F#m] make her [A] big mistakes
_ _ [E] She needs [F#m] new _
[A] Faces she [B] knows the [E] high state
[F#m] She knows [A] the high states
[B] _
Hi, _ _ _ [F#m] _ _ [A] _ _
[B] she knows the high
_ [F#m] _
She [A] _ _ [B] knows the [E] high
_ [F#m] _ _ _ [A] _ _ _
Thank [E] _ _ _ [F#m] _ _ [A] _ _
_ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ [G#] _
you very much _ _ _ _ _
