I got one today I'm sure you know well.
It is Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond.
Now we're going to be doing this in the original key, the original recorded key.
And when he played it back in the day, you know, he just had an acoustic guitar
and he would use a capo at the second fret in order to do it in that key that's on the album.
These days he doesn't usually use the capo when I see him play it live.
He uses the same chords but he just uses them down two frets and takes the capo off,
plays it in standard tuning.
Because of that it's a whole step lower in pitch than it is
on the original recording.
But I'm going to do it like he did back in the 70s when he was,
you know, first kind of doing this.
And I'm not going to be doing all the guitar overdubs either.
Just his part, the acoustic guitar chords, so you can just kind of do this on your own.
All right, but we're in standard tuning with a capo at the second fret.
Now the intro with all the kind of instrumentation over it is just over.
Now it's an F sharp major chord but with the capo I'm just going to call everything out
compared to the capo to make it easy.
So we are here [F#] at _ _ just an [B] E major [F#] chord.
Just play it.
This is just the intro.
It's just kind of based on this one chord.
Just play it and then mute it.
_ Down, mute, down. _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ All right, and then we get to the verse which is just these [B] four chords.

_ _ _ _ _ [B] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [F#] _ _ _ _
_ _ So it's that same rhythm here where we're kind of [B] muting between each chord but it goes from an A, _ _ _ _ _
play it eight [D#m] times to a D.
So that's compared to the [E] capo of course. _ _
_ _ _ _ Eight times as well.
[B] Back to the A.
_ _ Eight times.
[F#] And then the E.
_ _ _ _ _ [E] Eight times as well.
[B] All right, now the pre-chorus we get some more kind of some more interesting chords going on.
It sounds like this. _ _ _ _ _ _ _

_ _ _ _ _ [F#] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [G#] All right, so that starts with an A and this one's a lot looser feel to it.
[B] You don't really even have to play a straight strumming pattern for like the first time.
You just kind of strum the chord which it starts with an A major chord and then just kind of pick
across it.
_ _ _ Just kind of randomly pick across it.
Now this next chord is cool.
It's an F sharp minor
chord with A [G#m] in the bass.
_ _ So it's in first inversion there.
So we're just going to do a
bar across the third, sorry, second fret up from the capo across the top three strings.
_ _ [G#] And then [B] the fourth fret there on the D string.
Fourth fret above the capo and then the open A.
[G#m] So it is. _

So obviously we know that that's actually a G sharp minor chord but remember
we're comparing everything to the capo to make it easy.
_ [B] So so far we have the A. _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [G#m] _ _
_ _ So I have that A going in the bass [F#] and then the E.
_ _ Then you can start kind of start adding some strumming [E] and then up to the D. _ _
And then back down to the E.
_ [F#] _ _ _ _
_ _ So we have this.
[E] _ [F#] _
So all [B] together kind _ _ _ _
[G#m] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[F#] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[E] _ _ _ of straight eighth note feel just [F#] down up down up.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
[B] And then we get to the chorus which has a couple of bar chords in it
but it's not that difficult.
Sounds like this.

Back to the verse.
All right so let's go through those chords.
It's the A major again. _
_ So I'm just going down down up down up down up and [E] then to the D.
_ _ _ Sound the [B] same thing.
So down down up down up down [E] up down down up down up.
Hold the D and
play the exact same amount of time again. _
_ _ _ _ I'm just kind of holding a little bit longer than D
and then goes [F#] to the E. _ _ _ _ _
_ Then we start over [B] with the A and [E] then back to D.
Kind of holding that.
All _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [F#] right now this time when we go to the E we just start picking once across a series of
descending chords and [E] _ _
[D#m] _ _ [C#m] _ _ _ [B] that just kind of takes us down basically through the key all the way back
[F#] down to the one chord.
So that is an E major to a [E] D major _ C sharp [D#m] minor.
_ Now that C sharp minor
is going to be four frets up from the capo.
So when you're actually guitar it's going to be the
sixth fret and it's going to be a minor chord shape.
So if [A#] you don't know that it's going to
be a bar here.
[D#m] You really need the four strings in the middle.
Don't worry if you don't get that
top note in and that's just the sixth.
[D#] I'll say four frets of the capo there on the A string.
Six frets above the capo on the D and the G [G#m] and then five frets [D#m] above the capo.
So if it makes
it easier I'll just say it's the sixth fret on the guitar.
Eight on the D.
Eight on the G and
seven on the B.
_ So you take that _ and then [C#m] take it down two frets and _ [B] then we're back to the verse.
[F#] So we have this E [E] _
D [D#m] C sharp [C#m] minor B [B] minor. _
Once again that's all compared to the capo.
_ _ [F#] We're actually a higher pitch than that.
All right now the only other section you hear is a little
bit later in the song which is an interlude section.
Now that's played just like the intro. _ _ _

Just kind of juggling around on that E and then [B] back to the A _ _
[E] _ [G#] to go to the chorus.
