Switchfoot - Sex, God & Politics - Music can start the conversation chords
Start Jamming...
[F#m] [D] We're here [A] tonight in this building, [E] particularly because we have an incredible [F#m] memory in this
building from almost a year [D] ago.
[A]
And you can [E] never recreate music or the [F#m] magic that happens
of one night or the other, but [D] over the years we've had some [A] incredible times with Uterano
and we're looking forward to tonight.
[E] Our music is very communal and [F#] the thing that [Bm] excites me is that it's a two-way dialogue.
[G#m] Take for example our live shows, that's where we live and breathe every day.
[G#] And to be throwing
the music out there and have somebody singing it [Gm] back louder than the band is [N] an amazing
moment.
There's a lot of [B] exciting [C]
interaction that happens [A#m] in the show.
And then also, we'll
stand outside on the curb late into the night talking to [C#] people that come to the shows.
And just [F#] hearing their response to the music is [G#] really exciting.
To hear the personal stories
and [B] the connections with a song that's very personal to us [D] that ends up being universal
to somebody halfway around the world.
This is a song I've been [A] writing all my life.
It's a song about grace.
[E] Your love is a song.
[F#m]
[D] [A] There's no rhetorical questions in this band.
[E] The music's very honest.
There's nothing [F#] up
our sleeves.
We're very open about the idea that [D] we've learned a few things, but there's
[A] certainly a lot more things that we don't understand.
A lot that we've [E] yet to figure
out and music's a great vehicle for exploring [A] that.
[F#m]
[D] [F#m]
[G#m] I think we've been very guilty in [F#m] the Western church of suppressing questions and putting
things down and
[Em] being against.
I think a lot of people look at someone who believes in
Christ and say, oh, what's the definition of that?
Well, I know they're judgmental.
They don't believe in homosexuality.
They don't want you to have sex before marriage
and you probably shouldn't smoke.
Something like that, right?
That order.
Yeah, it's all framed in the negative.
I think if you truly believe that there is a God who
created the universe, then why would you be afraid to ask big questions?
Why would you
be afraid to love anyone?
I think it opens the door to be able to be the most accepting
people, the most [G] loving, the most genuine and ask the biggest questions because there's
[A] nothing to be afraid of.
[Em] I'm waiting for [C] somebody.
I want to give back the rest of [G] me.
I'm waiting for [B] somebody.
I want to spend the rest of my life
I [E] think he's a great example of someone who had [C] a lot of questions.
[G] For him, he would
adopt these characters [B] that would be the vehicle to discuss the question at hand.
For us, the
song becomes that vehicle that you can, in a verse and a chorus, talk about all these
taboo subjects.
Sex, God, and politics.
Somehow, rock and roll makes it okay and you're allowed
to talk [Em] about these things and we take full advantage of that.
[C] [G] [B]
