Hey everybody, Justin from TALA here, and as usual, if you have not watched the previous
episodes of this series, please go watch them first or you are going to be very, very confused.
So go do that.
The next track [A] on Metrifogy is Kangen.
[G] I'm sure a lot of you are familiar with it because it was the first song on the EP, No
One Should Read This.
Kangen is the [F#] name of the main character, so this was sort of his introduction.
The [E] song starts off with him saying, so here is just the way it is, I'm not clever enough
to fix it so I try my best to twist it.
And what he's talking about is his predicament that he's in.
He's saying that [Fm] he's not smart enough [N] to talk his way out of the situation, so instead
he's manipulating it and distorting it so that he can hopefully create some type of
loophole that he can escape.
He goes on to talk about how his mother is smothering him and she's lurking around [F#m] every corner.
He cannot do anything without [E] her knowing, which is [C#] why he's worried about her finding his journey.
An [Em] extremely [B] important note to make is the line where he says, [C] she likes to dress me
up, I swear she treats [B] me like a daughter.
Ever since he was a kid, Tala wished that he was [Em] a daughter.
She does not like him as a son.
So don't be confused, he doesn't have like a twin sister or anything like that.
Khungen is an only child.
His mother, just [N] when he was a kid, would dress him up as a girl and pretend he was
a girl, take pictures of him as a girl and you know, Khungen is her daughter.
And [Em] this behavior persisted into adulthood.
He still dresses up like a girl because it just makes her happy, it makes her smile and
that's all he wants is for his [G#] mother to love him.
[D#m] [Em]
Khungen is like a 25 year old man now, so he's grown up.
He isn't that little kid anymore [B] and his mother does not like the man that he became.
The [N] chorus is also very important in this song because he talks about how he hears voices
outside [Em] his window.
So the question is, is he actually hearing [B]
[N] voices outside of the windows of this building
or is he starting to hear voices from a little friend of his?
Either way, [Fm] it's starting to get [C#] to him and give him that sort of cabin [B] fever kind of thing.
In the second [A] verse, Khungen reveals that he is a cutter.
[E] This is something he does to cope with being so stifled.
It just makes him feel something.
So you can see that this character has a lot of mental issues because he's dealing or [G] not
dealing with a lot of the problems in his life.
Also note that he's deathly afraid of his mother.
He has a very toxic [C#] relationship with her where he feels like he has [D#] to listen to her.
Everything she says is like the do all end all of [E] his entire universe.
So if he lets her down, if he [N] defies her, if he does anything that makes her upset,
he feels frightened to death.
[Bm]
He actually thinks of himself [Em] as this innocent little bunny.
You know, he's cute and fluffy and wouldn't hurt a fly.
That's [B] sort of how he sees himself.
This is sort of part of the image that he's struggling with, which is why he later on
begins to relate a lot [G#m] to his stuffed animal rabbit, Lobby Fu.
[E] But I'm not going to wear these the whole time because they kind of hurt my head.
Towards the end of the song, Kangen does [A] consider running away.
[N] He's never been down that maze-like corridor [Dm] with the vault door at the end.
[A#] He doesn't even know what's at the end of this door.
So he kind of goes to this lightless hallway and considers going down it.
But you know how a lot of kids are afraid of the dark or what's [G] in the closet or what's
in the [Em] bed?
He kind of has that same type of irrational fear with this hallway.
And he actually ends up puking all over the carpet floor and just he can't do it.
So the purpose [C#] of this song is really to just [G] lay into this character and show you exactly
what he's like and the situation that he's in.
So that's all there is to that song.
As usual, if you have any questions or anything, throw them in the comments.
