I agree with you Tammy.
The songs are very very important in our business and the songwriters are
sometimes the unsung heroes.
They really are.
[Gm] The song itself I think regardless of how great
the singer is unless the song is there it's just no good.
That's for sure.
You have to have the song and
neither [N] of us have been known as writers.
Interrupt you.
Oh Ralph.
Conway they've been talking about you behind your back over there.
Who's been talking about me?
Well Miss Loretta Lynn and George Lindsay and the ladies sitting here.
Nice to see you again Tammy.
It's good to see you too.
If they've been talking about me I know what's good so I'm not
gonna worry about that.
We're sitting here talking about good songs Ralph and something you know a
lot about.
Oh no.
And good [Gm] songwriters.
I have known you and Conway to write good songs.
Well thank you.
I guess one of my all-time favorite country [Bb] songs is a song about a girl named Linda.
Ah you like that song?
Could we have a little guitar pulling here?
Yeah Charlie hit me in.
You remember that song?
And [E] he was a little too low.
[A] Does he remember [E] this song?
Yeah.
[E] Now I'm lying here with Linda on my mind
[Abm] [A] and next to me might soon to be the one I [E] left behind.
Lord it's killing me to see her crying.
She [A] knows I'm lying [B] here beside
[Gbm] [B] with Linda on [E] my [A] mind.
[E] [Bb] Speaking of songwriting and I know you you've had some humongous records
and one of my favorite [G] songs [Bb] uh till I can make it on my own.
I love it.
Would you do a little bit
of that for me?
I sure will.
Uh E flat I believe.
[Eb] I love the song.
[Bb] I'll need time
to [Ab] get you off [Eb] my mind.
Now [Db] I may [Ab] sometimes bother you.
[Eb] Try to be in touch with you.
[Bb] Even ask too much of you from [Eb] time to time.
My dearest Linda.
Now [Bb] and then.
[Ab] Lord you know I'll
[Eb] need a friend till [Db] I get [Ab] used to losing you.
[Eb] Let me keep on using you [Bb] till I can make it [Eb] on my own.
Oh that's beautiful.
How'd you ever think [Bb] of things like that?
I mean what did you do
to cause you to hurt that way?
I was asked a [N] question by the uh the other writer, co-writer
of his song.
If this ever happened to you what would you do?
And I said are you crazy?
It just
happened to me and I'd have to say till I get used to losing you let me keep on using you.
So we
we just started working around those two lines.
And when a songwriter sits down and pours himself
out or herself out and puts it on that piece of paper and puts it on a record for all of us to
enjoy [Abm] and we both know what's [Bb] in it.
You can do it better from the heart if if you've written it.
If the words come from [G] here then you can do it better.
I can better than [N] than something somebody
else has written for me.
I remember all the Conway 20 fans used to wear little badges right here.
They would say boom boom.
Oh yeah.
And that brought that opened a whole new can of nails for you.
Yes it did.
[Eb] There was a lot of controversy.
[Dbm] It was a big hit [C] song.
Well it's a good song.
Women
like that song and that's what saved the day for me.
It got rid of all the controversy.
What song are we talking about?
I'll just show you.
[A] I can almost hear the stillness [D] as it yields to the sound [A] of your heart beating. Now, Jamie.
[E] [A] I can almost hear the echo [D] of the thoughts that I [Bm] know you must [A] be thinking.
[Em]
[A] [E] And [E] as I taste your tender kisses I can [D] tell you don't love him [E] anymore.
[A] As I put my arms around [E] I can tell you never been this [A] far before.
Well that's pretty good.
[N] I remember to take this act [Eb] on the road.
[C] [Bb] Tami has an [N] amazing range.
I don't think people think of her as having an amazing range but she
did a song one time I think you know why though?
Because she let me look so weak.
Just stands there and goes from here to here.
I may not be the best but I'm the loudest.
She always sounds like she has a catch in her throat.
Well it's certain words.
It's something I can't control.
It's just there.
That's good though.
That's what they said to me about that little growl when I first
recorded it.
It's only make believe.
They said what's that?
I said I don't know what it is.
Just there which can't control it.
And that's what helps make Tami win it.
Tami win it.
Everybody loves it.
Thank you.
Yeah I heard that story one time Conway that she really did not like
Stand By Your Man.
Well I've been doing songs like Kids, I Don't Want To Play House, Divorce,
kid type songs and this was totally different from anything I'd ever done.
And we hadn't even
[Bb] written a song when the session started and Cheryl said, Billy Cheryl my producer said well
we've got two songs down let's go do let's go write this one we'll have a third song.
So we went
upstairs and wrote the song in about 20 minutes and it had a high note that to me [N] was just screaming
and I didn't like it but through the years I've learned to love it.
It was a high note kind of
like the Mississippi.
Yeah like that one we just heard.
But [Eb] I have learned to love the song now.
I've done it for so long till I couldn't do a show without it.
And I know you want me to do part of
that one right?
Come on Cheryl.
Stand [G] by your man [Ab]
give him two arms [Eb] to cling to [D] and [C] something warm to [F] come to
when nights [Bb] are cold [D] and [Eb] lonely.
Stand [G] by your man [Ab] and show the world you love [Eb] him
keep [Bb] giving all the [G] love you can.
[C]
[Ab] [Bb] Stand by [Eb] your [Ab] man.
[Eb]
