[F] Hello, I'm Taya Gherkin with Peghead Nation and I'm here with Taylor's new 812CE [Am] 12 fret deluxe.
This guitar is a brand new version of what's really a classic Taylor guitar.
[Bbm] Taylor introduced the 812 model back in 1984 when it first introduced the Grand [Abm] Concert
body shape, which has been their smallest body shape in the standard line of Taylor
guitars ever since.
The 812 has been very popular with fingerstyle players because it has a nice, balanced, clear sound.
It's very comfortable to play, but it's also quite versatile.
There's a lot of singer-songwriters who use the guitar playing with a pick, strumming
the instrument, and people really appreciate the clarity that this instrument has to offer.
Now, all of Taylor's Grand Concerts have seen a lot of changes over the years.
There's, of course, different wood combinations.
The 12 fret neck became an option several years ago, along with the slotted headstock,
so you can [Eb] get most Grand Concerts in both configurations.
But with this 812CE [E] 12 fret [C] deluxe, Taylor added some new features that are similar to
the [F] features that it has added to its other 800 series deluxe models, like the Grand Auditorium
and the Dreadnought.
And by those, I mean the armrest, which used to be the domain of the 900 series and presentation series guitars.
It's nice to see a deluxe version of the 800 with that.
The guitar also has Adirondack spruce braces, which really have a large tonal impact on
the instrument, and that it really creates a larger dynamic range.
So those are some deluxe upgrades to the standard 800 series type construction, which always
includes a spruce top.
In the case of this guitar, it's a Sitka [C] spruce top of beautiful quality, really the highest
quality that Taylor offers on its instruments.
Indian rosewood back and sides, again, very beautifully colored wood.
The guitar has the maple binding that Taylor started using on the 800 a few years ago,
when the guitar was redesigned by Andy Powers.
So it's got binding on the neck and the body.
It's got the abalone rosette, and of course, ebony fingerboard and bridge.
And as Taylor has done on quite a few of their models, they're really highlighting some of
the coloring that a lot of pieces of ebony offer.
And this guitar is no exception.
It has really [N] beautiful streaks in there that sort of go from a dark black to some more
brownish areas in there.
Like all of Taylor's 12 fret guitars, the guitar has the short 24 and 7 eighth inch scale.
It has a 1 and 3 quarter inch nut width.
And it has the open gear tuners that are found on all Taylors with slotted headstocks.
And it includes the ES-2 pickup system.
So it has the three elements behind the saddle and the controls for volume and tone right
here in the upper bow.
Some other features on this guitar include the slanted back bracing, which you can see
if you look inside.
Whereas on most guitars, the back bracing goes straight across.
On this, they are slightly slanted with the idea [A] being that it balances [B] the vibrations
off the back of this instrument.
It also has a wooden pickguard.
It's a rosewood pickguard that is a nice variation from the [Bb] typical standard pickguard that you commonly see.
The combination of the small body, the armrest bevel, the 12 fret neck, and the short scale
really create an instrument that's incredibly [D] easy to play.
I really [Bb] can't think of a steel string guitar that [Am] would be [D] more effortless than this is.
And that really means that you can concentrate on the [Bm] playing itself.
You don't have to worry [C] about the [Bb] action of the [D] guitar or how to [Dm] finger things.
It also has a beautifully balanced response.
When I was playing it earlier, I was hitting it fairly [G] hard in the [D] bass, [Em]
[D] really [Dm] pushing
the dynamic range a little bit.
But if I'm playing really soft,
[Gm] [Ab] [Dm] [Gm]
[A] [Bb] [Am] [Dm] the guitar really develops a [C] beautifully delicate voice
that is still very complex in its sound.
So a great dynamic [D] range on this instrument through a wide variety [Abm] of playing styles,
really.
Let's also listen to the guitar plugged into my Fishman Loudbox Mini Amplifier here so
we can hear what the ES-2 electronics sound like.
The ES-2, of course, is Taylor's proprietary pickup system.
It includes three piezo elements [D] mounted behind the saddle and the bridge.
And it has onboard controls for volume, bass, and trebles.
And the whole thing is powered by a 9-volt battery.
The system has been very well received, and [G] let's give it a listen.
[D]
[Em] [D]

[A]
[D] So nice, natural sound, excellent string balance.
There's no strings that sort of pop out over the others.
[C] I have the EQ completely flat on here, so you could shape the sound as you want on stage.
And it would also be a useful tool to have in the studio if you're recording this guitar.
So that's Taylor's new 812CE 12-fret [D] Deluxe.
It's a really cool upgrade to a classic Taylor guitar.
Kind of puts the 800 series right at the top of Taylor's offerings.
And it has some features that both affect the playability, such as the bevel, and the
tone with the Adirondack Spruce Bracing.
So it's a very cool development for Taylor to have done, and I really encourage people
who enjoy small-body Taylor guitars to check these out.
So please come back here at Peghead Nation for more gear demos.
My name is Taya Gherkin.
