Off and on for 20 years, Jerry McGee has been an integral part of the Ventures music.
Some people call him the fifth [A] Venture.
1967, 68, I was really doing a lot of [E] studio work in Hollywood,
like Elvis and the Monkees, Everly Brothers, John Mayall, Lenny and Bonnie.
And I got a [Dm] call one day from Mel Taylor asking me if I'd be interested in auditioning for the Ventures.
So, [E] you kidding me?
[F]
So I went down to [E] the audition, got my guitar, played a couple of songs, got accepted.
They said, you got the job, and I just couldn't believe it.
You can name any number of instrumentalists or musicians that have got good taste
and they play well and they've [F#] got good choice of material,
but they don't necessarily last or capture the public's imagination the way the Ventures have done.
So there's got to be some unknown quantity, like the magic charisma,
that's kept them on top for so long.
