Start Jamming...
John Lennon is one of the most beloved musicians of all time.
He was an actor, an activist, and was known for having an acidic wit.
Today, we're going to show you 10 interesting facts about the incredible John Lennon.
Let's begin.
Although he was one of the most recognized vocalists in history,
John hated his own voice.
This was one of the main reasons why he would double track his records.
Other times, he would ask producer George Martin to fix his vocals.
One time even saying,
Can't you smother it with tomato ketchup or something?
John was a notoriously bad driver.
He got his license at 24 in 1965 and stopped driving just four years later in 1969
after getting in a car crash.
The accident happened on July 1st, 1969,
when Lennon was driving his son Julian, Yoko Ono, and her daughter, Kyoko,
through the Scottish Highlands.
Although no one was severely injured,
they were sent to a nearby hospital where Julian was treated for shock
and Lennon, Ono, and Kyoko got stitches to repair facial lacerations.
After this incident, Lennon hired a driver.
John was the first person to appear on the cover of The Rolling Stones,
which was released on November 9th, 1967.
When Jan Wenner, founder of the rock and roll magazine,
saw the publicity shot of Lennon in the film How I Won the War,
he quickly decided to use it for the cover.
Jan says,
On hand, it was incredibly fortuitous, symbolic and prophetic of the future.
John had to cover up his first marriage for as long as possible.
Brian Epstein, the Beatles' manager,
insisted that John and his first wife Cynthia's marriage stay a secret for as long as possible.
Since the two got married just as Beatlemania was taking off in the UK,
Epstein feared that it would lower the group's popularity
among the largest fan base, young girls, if they knew one of the Fab Four was taken.
After taking a break from music in the late 70s to stay at home with his son,
Sean, John was actually prompted to get back to writing because of Paul.
John was sitting in the back of his driver's car in 1980,
listening to the radio, enjoying a new song called Coming Up.
When he realized it was Paul, he is claimed to have said,
Fuck a pig, it's Paul.
This motivated John to get back to writing.
Without glasses, John was legally blind.
Although in the early years of the Beatles, he hated wearing glasses,
they soon became a trademark of his.
However, this changed after he was given a pair of glasses for Richard Lester's film,
How I Won the War.
John eventually adopted these old-fashioned round granny glasses into his style,
and they quickly became fashionable.
John continued wearing these round glasses for the rest of his life,
and are now a hallmark of his look.
John claims to have seen a UFO in New York in 1974.
John says,
John was a huge fan of Monopoly,
during the Beatles touring days,
John would bring his own board around and play at hotels or on planes.
Art Schreiber, who accompanied the Beatles on their first US tour,
says the following about John's love of the game.
John always got really involved and excited.
He always stood up to throw the dice.
And if he got Park Place and Boardwalk, he'd be triumphant.
He didn't care if he lost the game, so long as he had those two properties.
We played so late sometimes that I'd doze off to sleep.
Then I'd feel a dig in my ribs and hear John's voice.
Come on, Art.
It's your move.
One of the last photos taken of John while he was alive was with his killer.
The picture is of John signing a copy of Double Fantasy for him.
However, the last photo ever taken of John
was reportedly taken of him while he was in the morgue.
Apparently, a photographer snuck in to snap a picture.
John was almost deported from the US in 1973.
He was ordered by the US immigration authorities
to leave due to his conviction of marijuana possession in England in 1968.
However, it was widely known that the real reason they wanted him out of the country
was because the US government feared the influence of Lennon's political views.
After two years of fighting with authorities,
Lennon's order of deportation was overturned and he was given his green card in 1976.
