[Eb] Hello everyone, I [B] have a very important announcement.
A lot of you have been asking for tapping tutorials [C] and advice.
So after the music I'm going to [D] tell you how I get my tapping tone and technique.
It's some easy hacks which any of you can [E] do.
[G] Another thing, go and check out [C] Antonio [D] Romero's latest video.
[Am] He just did an epic bass collab and [D] there's some really awesome players [A] in there.
I [D] also made a [A] cameo, so go and check that [D] out.
[Db] [Gbm] [G] [B]
[G] [Gb] [Db] [G]
[Am] I [D] also played on a [C] couple of smooth jazz recordings [D] with my friend Lars [A] Taylor.
Lars is making some waves in the world [Dm] of jazz.
His music is [D] really beautiful, [A] relaxing and [E] chill.
Perfect [Dm] if you like [Am] music while you're [D] studying or [A] working, but [Dm] also just [Gb] to listen to and [E] relax.
[A] So check him out in the description, take a listen [B] and let me know what you think.
[D] Anyway, here's the 10 [Eb] levels of tapping.
[Dm]
[Cm] [Bb]
[Eb] [Bb]
[Cm] [Bb]
[A] [Eb] [Bb]
[Ab] [Bb] [Cm] [Db]
[Dm]
[Eb] [Bb] [F]
[Bb] [Gm] [F]
[Eb] [Bb] [F]
[Bb] [Gm] [F]
[Bb] [Eb] [F] [D]
[Gm] [F] [Eb] [Bb]
[Am] [Gm] [F] [D] [Gm]
[Dm] [F] [Eb] [Bb] [Eb]
[G] [C]
[Gm] [G]
[Gm] [Eb]
[Bb] [F]
[Gm] [Eb]
[Bb] [F]
[Gm] [Eb]
[Bb] [F]
[Eb] [Bb]
[Cm] [Bb]
[Cm] [Bb]
[Ab] [Bb] [Cm]
[Db] [Bb]
[Eb] So the three easiest ways to improve your tapping tone and technique are
bright tone, low action and economy of motion.
[Ab] So let's take a look at how to achieve those things.
The best [Cm] first step to getting a bright tone is actually [Eb] just to use new strings every time you record.
But I do understand that can get expensive.
What you can do instead is boost the super highs on your EQ.
If you have a [Ab] detailed EQ pedal or plugins, then [Cm] I usually find boosting somewhere between about 5 and [Eb] 15k helps a lot.
[Ab] If you only have EQ on your bass, just turn up the high knob [Bb] a bit.
The reason [Eb] you want to do this is [Gm] because when you're [Cm] tapping, there's usually multiple notes being [Ab] played simultaneously.
If your tone is too bassy, then [Gm] all those low end [Eb] frequencies are going to clash together and sound [Ab] really muddy and unclear.
The next one is low action.
You can [Cm] adjust the action of your bass at the bridge and [Eb] also the truss rod.
Having [Db] a low action makes it so much easier to tap because [Eb] you're not having to push the string down really hard with your hand.
It's going to make tapping a lot less tiring and it's going to make you sound much smoother too.
And the last one is economy of motion.
This principle can be applied to almost every bass [Ab] technique and pretty much every technique on any instrument.
It's [Cm] essentially just saying that in order to have [Eb] great tapping technique, you just need [Cm] to make your movements as efficient as possible.
You want to be keeping your fingers [Eb] pretty close to the strings and also have them curved like [Ab] this.
Usually tapping with straight fingers doesn't go [Cm] too well.
In [Bb] order to play naturally with an efficient technique, I found I [Ab] had to do loads of exercises where I was [Bb] consciously making [Eb] my movements [Gm] as small as [Cm] possible.
I did this over and over again on [Ab] exercises and even though at first [Bb] it felt quite [Eb] unnatural,
the more I did it, [Ab] the more it just became part of my muscle memory.
And then I just started to play like that [Bb] no matter what I [Eb] was tapping [Gm] without thinking [Db] about it.
So, I hope that answers some of you guys' questions.
Let me know if you have any [Cm] questions or suggestions in the comments below.
I'll see you guys in the [Eb] next video.
