[N] I'm sure you all know this song you just heard is on the Prince Graffiti Bridge [F#] soundtrack.
And it's a smoking track.
Man, have you hung out with Prince?
Yeah, I hung out with him, well yesterday at rehearsal.
We sat in the car and listened to some music.
And when I recorded Round and Round, I hung out with him a lot.
Oh, so you're in the movie?
Yeah.
Oh, what do you play in the movie?
Well, I'm like this kid, I'm the son of a club owner, Melody Cool, which is Mavis Staples.
And I'm just, cause she owns this club and she's out all night, so I'm just like this kid sticking his nose into everything that's around.
Yeah.
You look good, man.
I saw the video, I was so happy to see you in the suit and everything.
Cause you know, you always fear that if somebody hooks up with Prince, booty will be hanging out of their pants or something like that.
But instead, Quincy dressed you, I think, or somebody who has a different influence.
No, Prince.
Oh, Prince told you to wear a suit?
Well, that's good.
[N]
Yes, cause I was so afraid you'd have a piece of lace over your eye and some pumps on next time I saw you.
But this is a good look for you, right?
You've also met Michael, haven't you?
Yeah.
What kind of stuff do you learn when you have a conversation with Michael Jackson?
Oh, God.
Well, he tells me everything.
Like, every time I meet someone, they tell me the same thing.
To stay level-headed, to be careful in this business, and to do your best.
You know, do your best.
And Michael, it was great.
I couldn't take no advice, cause I was thinking how great it was [A] meeting him.
And, cause I [G] sang for him, it was at [N] the Soul Train Music Awards of 89, and I sang for him in his dressing room.
And he asked me to come to his office the next day.
The next day, I went to his ranch.
It was great.
You know, Michael told me that when he hears you sing, he thinks of himself a lot.
I don't know if he mentioned this to you.
And you've been compared, I mean, Michael thinks that, and a lot of people compare you to Michael.
They compare you to Stevie.
What do you think about the comparison?
Well, um, you know, Michael is, you know, he's had a lot of success.
Just like Stevie.
And I always say I would like to have, you know, the success that they've had, but I wouldn't want to have the same style.
I want to be Ted and Cam.
That's a good idea.
[D#] How do your friends and your family handle your success?
Well, my friends, um, they ask me a lot of questions, which get on my nerves sometimes.
They ask me, like, when are you going to be on the next show?
When are you making your album?
What's the name of the song?
How does it sound good?
Who have you met?
Yeah.
And my family, they're cool.
They ask a lot of questions when they don't go somewhere with me, and I meet someone, but they're cool.
Yeah.
Allow me to get on your nerves just for a second.
[C] When is that album coming, man?
Have you started on it?
Well, I'll be in the studio in about a week, a couple of weeks, because Quincy, you know, he's busy and everything.
So, um, and the album will be out next year, around spring.
[F#] Let me ask you what you think about your success.
What do you hate about it?
What do I, well, I couldn't hate anything with Prince and Quincy.
What could you complain about?
[N]
There's really nothing to hate, you know.
Some things get on your nerves, because I'm really not used to it yet.
But next year I might get used to it.
But, you know, some things get on your nerves a little.
Well, I'm glad you're happy and doing well and everything.
Anytime you want to come back, come back.
I'm hoping next time I see you, you'll have an album.
I would love to.
I would love to come back.
Love to come back.
