Hello, this is JJ from PianoDownloads.com and I want to talk to you about a lick that I heard.
I heard, I was listening to Pandora and
[D] Melinda Watts, I'm Available To You, came on, her
rendition of that.
And she did the song in the [A] key [Bm] of [Dbm]
A.
[A]
But the lick that I heard, I hear it a lot in,
I hear a lot of [F] gospel musicians do it and I'm thinking, [Db] what is that lick?
Why don't I play that [N] lick?
And this is it, I'm going to actually play it and see so I can explain it to you.
But first, [C] well yeah, let me play it and see.
[Em] This lick right here.
[Dbm] [C]
What was that?
And of course she [A] did it in A.
[G]
[A] And what is that?
What is it about those kind of licks that [D] make you a good gospel player?
I [E] don't know.
The whole thing like, you know,
[F] [G] to make you sound, [C] you [F] [Em]
[Eb] [F]
[Ab] know, I don't know.
If that's the attitude you [Db] want to give your playing, then that's fine.
But let me show you, let me explain to you the theory behind [Eb] that.
Basically, it's a clever [Db] way to get to the two chord.
[Em] And all it is is an E minor on the right [G] hand over D.
That's what, if you were playing in
Logic, I'm looking at Logic's chord scanner right now and it says E minor over [Dbm] D.
[Am] And
this is a big, fat, messy chord.
This is actually going to be your rootless D minor.
But [Db] if that confuses you, if you don't know, if you can't process an E minor first inversion
that quickly, just do this.
[Dm] You're going to go to the two chord, which is going to be [A] your D minor.
So you're going to, left hand you're going to go on the D, on the root of the D minor.
You're going to play a C [Db] over [C] that, but you're going to drop the root, [Em] drop the C note a half step.
And that's all.
[E]
[C] And [Em] then, you know, [G] you have a G chord right here.
So you know how, you know, let's do it in another [F] key.
[Eb] [Dm]
Sounds good [Gb] in F sharp.
[B] [Gb]
[Db] Check it out.
[Bbm] Wait a minute.
Wait, wait, wait, [Bb] wait.
Ah, [Gb] there we go.
You know, so, you know, [Cm] so, [Bb]
[Ab] [Eb] you know, that was, hey, I just did it in F sharp.
And let [Bb] me tell you, this [Ab] is, [Db] when I go to the six, [Ab] because everybody talks about seven,
[Bb] three, six, two, five, one, four, R nine, or [Eb] whatever.
You're going to go to the six, and then you're going to go to the [Ebm] two.
[Fm] So I'm in D flat right [Gb] now.
So you can either do that lick if you want.
[Eb] Remember, take a [Ab] C, take a C sharp, drop the root.
[Eb] You're going to go to the two chord.
You're going to play the root of that two on the left [Fm] hand.
[F] And you have this [Db] cool lick.
[Ebm] [Db] You know, your messy two chord.
So, or [Bbm] you can just go like [Eb] this.
This is my tension B flat.
And this, if you were [Bb] to play a B flat seven,
[Fm] and then [Ab] keep adding these intervals, you,
the chord scanner would say B flat seven, nine, eleven, thirteen.
But we're not going to play it like that.
[Bb] We're going to play
[Ab] one, seven.
Then we're going to take a fourth [Eb] up.
[Bbm] [Ab] And the cool thing about it is [Eb] when you're playing this chord, [G] I did a video on arpeggios
on your left hand.
And remember how I said your index finger is conveniently where the [D] perfect fifth is?
Well, in this particular chord, [Ab] your middle [Eb] finger is conveniently where the fourth is.
So you [Cm] play a C minor seven on the right hand [Bb] over [Eb] B flat, [Ab] E flat, A [Eb] flat.
And then you drop down to B [D] diminished seven on the [Eb] right hand.
And then you take this E flat and drop it down.
And you have this nice, [D]
fat way to get to [Gb] the two [Bbm] chord.
[Ab] [Gb]
[Gm] [Db] [Ab]
So check it out.
[Bb]
[Ebm] [Fm] Or you can just do [F] this.
[Bb] [Ab]
[Db] [Gb] [Db] So take in that lick.
You know, that lick has [Gb] been around.
I just, [E] I'm like, oh, that's cool.
I got to figure that out.
So, you know, if you heard that song, you want that lick, there you go.
I mean, even, what's a key you don't play in?
Nobody plays an E.
So [Gbm] you [B] could do that lick in the key of E if you wanted to.
Check [D] it out.
[E]
You know.
[Eb] [B] [Gb]
[Db] Or you can do it this [B] way.
[G]
[Dbm] [B] [Am]
[Dbm] [Ebm]
[E] So there you go.
[Bb] Have fun with that.
And thank you very much.
[Eb] [Dm]
[Bb]
[F]
[Eb]
[Gm]
[F] [Eb]
I heard, I was listening to Pandora and
[D] Melinda Watts, I'm Available To You, came on, her
