My name is Michael Steele.
[D] And I'm Vicki Peterson.
Susanna Hoffs.
And Debbie Peterson.
[B] Now because everything is so regulated by machines, you know, it's like
The human feel, the human touch is important with our sound.
It's not [Bb] all electronic, [Gb] it's more the human touch, I'd say.
Good music [B] of any era has definitely been an influence for us.
We're [Gb] basically music lovers.
I'm going [E] down to the river [Gb] for the holiday.
I'm going down to the river for the holiday.
When we were real small, Debbie and I used to take trips with our family [Ab] across the country to Michigan, where our relatives are.
And that was my favorite summer vacation, [N] spending five days in the Buick.
You know, I don't know why.
I always
It's a great place for daydreaming.
It's a great place for writing songs.
I do 80% of my songwriting on the San Diego freeway in my car.
And the driving in the van is not adverse [D] to me at all.
Actually, I like it.
[Am]
Turn [A] around, [D]
trying to remember where [Am]
[A] to go.
[D]
[G] [D]
[B] It's fun.
It's a different [Gb] aspect of what we do, but we do write our own songs.
We do play our [Eb] own instruments.
We're a rock band.
We [Em] would never give that up.
I would [Ab] never give that up.
It would just
It wouldn't feel comfortable.
It's too fun.
[Bb] We are so rough.
I think
We'll always be rough.
I [B] think rough edges are our life.
That's what we do best.
Yeah, that's what I'm trying to say.
The rough edges, the feedback, the [Em] gnarly mistakes.
Do you consciously inject those into the [Bb] show?
Oh, yes.
It's all for a purpose.
It's been three minutes without a [Gb] rough edge, so let's put one in here.
Every time I make a mistake, it's definitely intentional.
[Bb] It's all choreographed.
What we do now is we [Gbm] have a guy that stands by the side of the stage,
and he has the whole show [Bb] taped.
And we have made the mistakes [Bb] be a part of the tape, you see,
so that we don't have to worry about it.
The whole thing's on emulator [G] and computers and synthesizers.
It's none of us anyway.
I have to say that you do a fabulous [Gb] job of syncing the mistakes.
[F] Oh, yeah.
Thank you so much.
We're [Gb] very well-prepared.
[Bb] You never know that you were syncing to them.
Yeah.
It's just amazing.
[Gb] We learned all our tricks from the top.
Whoa!
Whoa!
[E] Doll and Benny working [Em] for Benny
Trying to get a piece of [B] the ride
[Ab] In the coffeehouse, the [Ebm] bathroom's a house
[Eb] And [E] after every number, they've hugged the hat
[B] McGlynn and Maguire, Tess [Gbm] are getting higher
In L.A.,. [C] you know I [E] like the hat No one's getting [D] fat as that [B] hot We're [G] music lovers like everyone else, you know. We're just people we just happen [C] to have at some point early on. I mean, I started playing guitar when I was like 7 or 8. You know, decided that [E] I loved singing [G] and playing. Dancing and performing. There's just something that just drives [F] you to want to do it. To learn. At some point. I mean, you just bought a guitar. Something [G] made you think, well, maybe I should try it. [N] Now it's It is unusual, isn't it? It's more [G] fun than watching. I know. I know. We got into some pretty heavy production values And we started [C] getting away from the way we [F] think we are in real life. You know, we're basically a guitar band, a garage band. And that's what we're shooting for with [G] this next record. The guitar. The [Abm] electric guitar is going to make a big comeback [C] on this record. Tell us about the [Fm] latest album. This [C] is the first one in three years [Eb] almost, right? Two and a half. Two and a half. Seems like three years. [Db] Seems like 30 years. Why did you have to wait like that? [F] Because we were on the road, actually, for most of that time. We weren't waiting. We were working the whole time. People have this image of us on a desert [Db] island [Fm] somewhere, relaxing. Having a sun tan. A little tan, they know. We were busy touring the world [Eb] and writing. And then in between albums we put out a song called Hazy Shade of Winter, which had been done [C] originally by some Yeah, for the motion [G] picture. Right, for Less Than Zero. Less Than Zero. [Ab] So we were busy bangles all [B] that time. Hazy Shade was a song that we'd done when we were playing [Cm] clubs and we were paying people to dance and all that, way [G] back when, you know. And we thought, well, it's a chance to get our feet wet [Abm] again. We haven't been in the studio for a long [Em] time. We just wanted to get in [A] and have some fun. [D] [A] [E] [A] [D]
[A] [E] [Bm]
[A] [D]
[A] [D] We don't [E] know what's going to happen in the future, but it's fun being in a band. And if you can [C] learn to deal with the pressures [Ab] and enjoy it, [G] like anything else in life. Yeah, like they say, if you can survive success, you can survive anything. Yeah. [D] [G] [D]
[G] [D]
[E] [D]
[A] [E] Oh! [D] [Em] [D]
[G] [D]
[G] [D]
We did [Ab] not even know we were nominated until we got here this afternoon. Wait a minute, where's mine? Here's yours. Oh, thank you. Oh, wait, get her one. That one's good. We got them. Four of them. How nice of them. I think the real performers in the Egyptian video were the people [F] of the streets of New York City. And we have [Abm] a list of their names right here. Okay, we'd like to thank especially [Gm] our brand new friend, Gary [Ab] White, for doing such a great job. All right, [Em] Gary, have a good time. Thank you so much. I guess I could speak for [A] all of us and say that there's other things that [B] we could possibly do, but we feel so strongly about music, we feel like it's the only thing we can [E] do. So we have no choice. We have to do [D] this. This is what comes out. [A] [E]
