Dear sir, I write this note to you to tell you of my plight, [G] for at the [D] time of writing
it [A] I'm not a pretty sight.
[D] My body is all black and blue, my face a [Bm] deathly grey, [D] and I write this note to say [E] why I am
not at [D] work today. _
While working on the fourteenth floor, some bricks I had to clear, but tossing them down
from such a height [A] was not a good idea.
The foreman wasn't very [G] pleased, he is an [Bm] awkward sod, and [D] he said I had to cart them
[A] down the ladders [D] in me hod. _
_ _ _ Well clearing all these bricks by [A] hand it was so very [D] slow, so I hoisted up a barrel
and [A] secured a rope below.
[G] But in me [D] haste to do the job I was too blind to see [D] that a barrel full of building bricks
[A] was heavier [D] than me.
_ _ _ _ _ And so when I untied the rope [A] the barrel fell like lead, and clinging [D] tightly to the rope
I [A] started up instead.
I shot up like a rocket, and to my [Bm] dismay I found [D] that half way up I met the bloody
barrel coming down. _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Well the barrel broke me shoulder as to the ground it sped, [G] and when I [D] reached the top
I [A] banged the pulley with me head, [G] but I clung on [D] tightly numb with shock [G] from this almighty [Bm] blow.
[D] Well the barrel spilled out half its [A] bricks some fourteen [D] floors below. _ _
_ _ _ _ _ Now when these bricks had fallen [A] from the barrel to [D] the floor [G] I then outweighed [D] the
barrel and so [A] started down once more. _ _ _
_ _ _ But I [D] clung on tightly to the rope, [G] me body racked with [Bm] pain, [D] and half way down I met
the [A] bloody barrel [D] once again. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ The force of this collision, [A] half way down the [D] office block, caused multiple abrasions
and a [A] nasty case of shock, but I clung on tightly to the rope as I fell [Bm] towards the
ground [D] and I landed on the broken bricks [A] the barrel had scattered [D] round. _ _ _ _
_ Well as I lay there on the floor I thought [D] I'd passed the worst, but the barrel hit the
pulley wheel [A] and then the bottom burst.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [G] A shower of [D] bricks rained down on me, [G] I didn't have a hope.
[D] As I lay there bleeding on the ground I let go the bloody rope. _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ The barrel now being heavier it started down once more.
_ [G] It landed right [D] across me as [A] I lay there on the floor.
[G] It broke three [D] ribs in my left [G] arm and I can only [Bm] say, I hope you'll understand why I am
not at work today.
