Welcome to Vanderbilt.com. This is in response to a request for
the difference between whiskey and you
It's a really beautiful song by Chris Stapleton a number of guys have country guys have done
covers of it most notably
Tim McGraw but
really the original is is is much better in my opinion and
That's what I'm gonna be teaching here, so we're in drop D tuning and otherwise
You know no capo or anything like that, so let's get started
[D] [G]
[D] [Gm] [D]
[G] [A] [D]
[Bm] [B]
[Bm] [F#m] [D]
[Bm] [D]
[G] [C] [D]
[A] [D]

[A] [D]
[Em] [D] [A]
[D]
[A] [D]
Okay, you're in drop D tuning and
[N] I'm just gonna call the strings by their numbers instead of their letters because it gets too confusing you get to D strings now
You're gonna start with this open sixth [D] string and the fourth string
You're gonna fret it at the second fret and you're gonna hammer on to the fourth fret
you're going to play these two notes together like this and
Hammer on then you're gonna hit [A] that
that [D] low sixth string and
Then [F#] come back to the fourth string fourth fret
so you've got
[D] Then you're gonna come back [F#] and play the the bass as an [D] alternate so it
And then slide up one fret
And then slide up to the seventh fret
[A]
[D] You're alternating there.
I hope you can see that
[G] So they just [Am] exaggerate it
[D]
[G] [D]
[D]
[G]
[N] He plays that twice for the introduction and then once when he's singing the first part of the the verse
Okay at this point you're you're you're starting on a B minor 7
I'm just gonna show the chord diagrams below to make it a little easier
Because it may be hard to see so you start with this B minor 7 and you're gonna play
the fifth and the [G#] fourth string with your thumb like this in [F#] succession and then you use your
Index finger to [Bm] sweep up like this so
And [E] then you take your middle finger off and that gives you this F sharp minor with a [B] B bass
[F#m] And you just alternate
the the [B] fifth string and the sweep
[G] and then you hammer [F#] back into the B minor [B] 7 and [Bm] [F#]
[Em] [F#m] then you're back to
this
[E]
[D] [G]
[D] [G] and then you've got a
[A#] descending figured it's [B] based on again the
B minor 7 this time you're just playing
the fifth string and then you're moving to the
Third second third string so
[Bm] [B]
You take this finger.
Just move it back so that you're opening up this fifth or a string.
So
[D]
[Bm] [D]
I'm sorry to get my [A] fingers in there, too
[D]
And then [N] you've got the kind of cool slide up thing that that he has and what you're doing is you're just sliding up from
You know kind of nowhere, but you're sliding up to the fifth fret and you're getting
[A#m] you're sliding up the the sixth string [G] and
then hitting the
The fifth string at [D] the fifth fret too, so it's
and [G] [D]
then you're [N] what you do to get the stretches instead of you're gonna hammer on to the
Fifth string seventh fret but don't do it with your ring finger do it with your index finger because that gives you
This kind of stretch.
All right, so you're gonna [G] go
[D] and then play
these two strings
[G]
[C#] that's just the
[A] the fifth and the fourth together
[G]
[Em] then you reach as far as you can with your pinky and you you are on the
fourth string tenth fret and
and
[E]
So it sounds like [G] that
[E] [C]
That's that's the deep the the low sixth string and this fourth string tenth fret together
and then slide it down to the ninth fret for some relief and play
The sixth string and that fourth string [G] together again
[D]
[C] [G]
[C] [G]
[F#] It's actually not as hard [G] as it looks
[C] [Em]
And the whole trick to it again is using this finger
[N] to to play this note because if you don't do that if you use this finger then
You know, you're kind of reaching around here
But if you if [G] you could just make this stretch you're already in a position to do this
[C] [G]
[Bm] And then you go [N] down to to finish the verse you go down to a D.
You don't play [A#] the first string
and just play
The [D] open six and then the
third
second third and then just make a easy a like this and just strum it [A] down and
Then play the open [D] six
[D] Hammer on to the [A] second fret of the [B] fifth
play [D] the fourth and
Then the open six again, so and then the D chord
[C#] So that part is [D] just slowly I hope you can see both hands [D] here
[A] [D]
you go into the course
the difference between whiskey and you
