Now, if you ever stayed at a resort in Fiji, you were probably serenaded with Bula Malaya,
also known as the Fijian welcome song.
On a recent visit, I wondered what the words to Bula Malaya really meant.
So I found out.
Now, before we start, you need to understand that the song was written during the Malaya campaign.
This was quite some time ago.
There was some conflict in Malaya, or Malaysia.
And during that time, in the Malayan campaign, the British Commonwealth sent troops from
a number of their countries.
And Fiji was one of those countries.
So the Fijian and Malayan troops got together, and this song was written to commemorate the
cooperation between those two countries.
So Bula Malaya means welcome or greetings Malaya.
But for one reason or another, it's become the official welcome song of the Fiji Islands.
