To go back in time and re-record these songs was a whole lot more difficult than I thought it was going to be
Maybe I took it for granted.
I don't know but
to get these songs the way I wanted them I
Had to go strictly by the originals as dated as they were
The sound and all that the one thing that I lived on was bringing them up to date
And yet keeping as much of the feel as much of the emotion and getting the point across
as well as I did on the originals and as time has evolved and we've we've
Done and redone and redone and redone these songs on stage
They've changed somewhat and you don't realize it as you're doing it
But they do they change a lot [G] and so when I went back in the studio to re-record them
I had to lay the originals down right there [B] where I could refer back to them and and [Gb] and I mean every verse because
Some of the phrasing had changed the tempos had definitely changed and so we had to adapt everything back to its original state
[E] and and you might say
Try to capture the original feel all over again
[Db] Well in order to capture this feeling everything [C] Dirk
Got copies of each and every one of the songs that we were set in to record and he put them on the computer and
[Eb] and every time there was a question or something or if I was rolling, you know the song and and
And something didn't feel [Am] right or he didn't think it sounded right or something like that.
We would stop
Recording right then and go back
To [G] the original and and literally play it and and I would have to listen at it and study it and
A lot of people may not realize it, but it's extremely [A] hard
To capture the feel that you had 20 years ago
[G] Because I live on phrasing.
I love phrasing to me.
That's what makes a [N] song a song
Even if it's a great song you can ruin it if it's not
Phrased right and to capture the original phrasing on these songs was extremely difficult
I needless to say I had to work at it quite quite hard as far as recording them
I think I think each and every one of them was a surprise in the fact that [E] I had I had forgotten maybe
How simple it was for me back then and how different it would be now
Because
It's impossible to capture [Ab] the feeling that you had back then [E] I mean on every song and and
And I mean to be perfectly frank a lot of these songs that was back when I drank
You know and then I was drinking when I recorded a lot of these songs and and who knows who knows why I?
Would sing them the way I would but I still
Had to go back and [Abm]
recapture this without drinking because I don't drink anymore, but
But it was [Gm] it was it was really it was really hard and [Gb] to be honest some of the feeling on these songs
You'll never you'll never be able to to recapture exactly and that's in my mind.
Hopefully
The fans and the people that buy you know the album won't notice the difference
But that's exactly why I still record
As they say old school, I mean [Eb] when I'm recording I go in I [E] want to record with the band
I want to lay down the tracks as close as I can when they're recording because there's a certain amount of inspiration there as
Did I do on this project right here each and every one of these songs?
I went in there and sang these tracks right as they were being laid down
Even though I had to go [G] back in and listen to the originals and [Eb] and and re-sang some of it and re-sang some of it
I still wanted to capture that emotion and that feel that comes from the [E] live
Response off those musicians and them off of me
Maybe I took it for granted.
