[Dm] We're going to do one [D] here, it's new to us.
This song we got,
[B] [B] talked to a friend of mine, we wanted to record it for our CD.
It's a Utah Phillips song.
I don't know if [C] any of y'all are familiar with Utah Phillips.
[Bm] He's a traveling hobo songwriting hero of [A] mine.
I like the old people who ride the rails and sing hobo songs.
A [F] buddy of mine knows him personally and said, you know, if you want to record one of his
songs, he doesn't really care [Bm] about royalties.
He said just [G] call him and ask him.
And so I [B] did, and he called me back and he was thrilled to death that somebody [C] wanted
to record a song of his.
[D] This one's been recorded before.
We learned it from Hazel Dickens' version.
Jamie Lynn's going to sing this one.
[G] Chase Teal's going to help her out.
This is called the Green Rolling Hills of West Virginia.
[B] We got some West Virginia natives here.
We got to sing for them.
And we've been away from home for a little bit lately.
We only got home for about a day and [Bm] then had to come up here.
We were up in Wisconsin and that's a long [F] drive and we kind of [A] miss the hills of West
Virginia, but this looks an awful lot like it.
I'll [D] tell you what, it's beautiful here.
Here we go.
[G]
[A]
[G] I cannot linger here.
[D]
They'll keenly [A] never [D] let me go.
My daddy [A] said don't ever [D] be a miner, for [G] a miner's grave is all you'll ever [A]
own.
[D] There's hard times everywhere, I can't find a spare.
[D] These are the worst times [F#m] I've ever known.
But the green [A] rolling hills of [D] West Virginia are [G] the nearest thing to heaven [A] that I know.
[D] Though times are sad and [G] drear, I cannot linger here.
[D] They'll keep [A] me and never [D] let me go.
[G]
[Am] [D]
[G] [D]
So I'll move [A] away into some [Dm] crowded city.
In [G] some northern factory town you'll [A] find me there.
Though [Dm] I leave the past behind, [G] I'll never change my mind.
[D] These troubled times are more than I can bear.
But the green [A] rolling hills of West Virginia [G] are the nearest thing to heaven that [A] I know.
[Dm] Though times [D] are sad and drear, [G] I cannot linger here.
They'll keep [A] me and never [Dm] let me go.
[D]
But someday [A] I'll go back [Dm] to West Virginia, to the [G] green rolling hills [A] I love so well.
[Dm] Yes, someday I'll go home and [G]
I'll do wrong.
[D] These troubled times [A] will follow me no [D] more.
[Dm] Yes, someday I'll go home and [G] I'll do all but do wrong.
[Dm] These troubled [A] times will follow [Dm] me no more.
These troubled [A] times will follow me [D] no more.
[D] [Dm]
