[C] Rock band The Police [G] formed in London, [Am] England in 1977.
[F] Though they worked with a few [D] other musicians early on, The Police became [B] a trio consisting
of singer [D]-bassist Gordon Sumner, known as Sting, guitarist Andy [F#m] Summers, and drummer
Stuart [F#] Copeland by the end [G] of that summer.
They [A#] released their punk [Gm]-influenced debut, Outlandos Damour, in 1978, and this [Dm] was the
same year that they signed with A [D#]&M Records.
The [Dm] album featured new wave [C] and reggae rock [Gm] sounds, and helped them [G] achieve success in
the UK thanks to the popularity of the single Roxanne.

[A] The reggae and punk-inspired record topped the UK [E] chart, and reached the fifth position
on the US [A] Billboard Pop Albums chart.
It also became their North American [E] breakthrough with two top ten hits.

[A#] Following another tour, the band [F] went on a brief hiatus.
[G] Due to their [A] success, the band's members were [B] then able to pursue other [C#] interests.
Their [G] activities outside the group included [A] acting in films, [Bm] composing musical scores,

As [E] frontman, Sting began [F#m] to [B] enjoy even greater success than the other members, and [G#] this partially
contributed to the tensions that arose between him and the [Fm] band's founder, Copeland.
Despite this, the police dropped Synchronicity [C#] in 1983.
This [D#] was a synthesizer-heavy effort that was [G#] influenced by world music.
The album topped charts in the UK and the US, mainly on the strength of the massively
successful single, [Fm] Every Breath You [F] Take.

[F] After a tour in support of the record, the police went [G#] on another break.
In 1985, [E] Sting released his first solo album, The Dream of the Blue [Gm] Turtles, [G]
[A] and [Dm]
[A] the other
members worked on their own musical projects.
The police attempted to write a new album in 1986.
However, increasing tensions and Copeland's collarbone [E] injury thwarted these efforts.
A compilation [G] called Every Breath You Take, The [Am] Singles, was released [A] instead.
After the band's breakup, the members of the police [G] concentrated on individual ventures.
[A] Summers worked as a solo artist and with other [B]
musicians, while Copeland composed several
musical soundtracks [G] and performed with other bands.
However, [G] it was Sting who had the [B] most successful post-police [E] career.
He won [F#]
[G] a number of Grammy [B] Awards for his solo work, teamed up with numerous [E] artists, and
contributed to several movie [F#] soundtracks.
Following decades of [Em] solo work and various one [G]-off reunion performances, [A] the band officially
[C] got back together to celebrate [F] their 30th anniversary.
[G]
[Dm] [C] [D#]
[D] After a highly anticipated [Cm] performance at the 2007 [C] Grammy Awards, they [Gm] embarked on a world tour.
The police reunion tour ended in 2008 and [E] was one of the highest-grossing [D#] tours of all time.
That same year, they [D] came out [C#] with the live release [G] Certifiable, live [F] in Buenos Aires.
The members then [G] returned to working on their own projects for the rest of the decade.
[G#] By incorporating punk, reggae, and jazz into [G] their sound, the police emerged as one of
the earliest new wave [C] groups to gain international success in the [A#m] 1970s.
Thanks to their unique style of rock, they have since [B] become an influential part of musical pop culture.
