_ _ _ _ _ _ [Gb] Hey guys, Wendell Kimbrew here at WendellK.com.
_ [Eb] Working on a song today called The Lord is My Light.
This is not a song that I wrote.
This is by a woman named Lillian Buknite.
I don't know if I'm saying her name correctly or not.
Copyright 1980.
_ _ I learned this song from an AME church in Maryland called St.
Stephen's in Unionville.
I love that church.
Those guys, if any of you are watching, _ God bless you.
Thank you for the way you impacted my life.
_ _ This song is one of my favorites of all time. _ _ _
I'm just going to sing it for you and then I'll talk a little bit about how I play it
at the end.
The Lord is my light.
_ _ _ [C] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ The Lord is my [G] light and my _ _ [Dm] _ [C] salvation.
The [G]
Lord is my light.
_ [C] And my _ _ [Dm] _ [G] salvation, the Lord [Dm] is my light.
_ And my _ _ [C] salvation, _ _ _ whom [G] shall I [C]
fear? _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ Shall _ I fear?
_ _ _ _ _ [F] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ [C] _
_ _ _ The [G] _ _ [C] _
Lord is the strength _ _ _ of my [Am] _ _ [D] life.
[C]
Who _ _ [G] shall _ [C] I be _ _ _ _ _ _ in the time [G] of trouble? _
He _ [Dm] shall [C] hide me [G]
in the time of trouble. _ _
He shall [Dm] _ [G] hide me _ in the time of [C] trouble. _ _
He _ [Dm] shall [G] hide me.
Whom _ shall [G] I [C] _
_ fear? _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [E] _ _ _ [F] _
_ Whom shall _ [C] I fear?
_ _ _ [G] _ [C] The Lord is [G] the strength _ _ _ of my [Am] life.
[D] _ _ [C] _
Whom _ [G] shall I [C]
fear? _ _ _ _ _ _
Wait on [G] the Lord _ and be of [Dm] good _ [C] courage.
[G] _
Wait on the Lord and be of [Dm] good _ [G] courage.
[C] Wait on [G] the Lord and be of [Dm] good _ [C] _ courage.
_ Whom _ shall I _ _ _ fear? _ _ _ _
_ _ _ Shall I _ _ fear?
[E] _ _ _ _ [F] _
_ Whom shall _ [C] I fear?
_ _ _ [G] _ [C] The Lord is [G] the strength _ _ _ of my [Am] _ _ [Fm] life.
[G] _
_ _ [C] Whom shall [G] _ [C] I fear? _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
There it is.
The Lord is my light and my salvation.
Whom shall I fear?
_ _ Um, okay, C major.
_ _ [C] This one's a little bit tricky, I'm gonna be honest with you.
So, _ C major.
The Lord [Dm] is my [D] light.
What I'm playing there is an [Dm] F6. _
It's just an F with an extra D in it.
_ _ [C] _
The Lord [Dm] is [G] my light.
To me, that note is kind of essential to the character, you know, of this [C] song.
But you can get away with playing it.
[C] The Lord is my light.
Just play an F there, that's fine too.
But, [Dm] uh, _ [G] _ I like that [C] D in there.
The Lord is [G] my light.
C, [C] F, C, and my _ [Dm] salvation. _
Same thing again.
_ _ [Dm] _ _ _ [F]
F6.
[Dm] The [Fm] way I'm playing that F6, I'm thumbing over [C] here.
Um, and I've got my pinky giving me the D that makes it into a 6 chord.
_ _ _ [C] _
_ _ Second line.
[G] The Lord is my light.
I'm really doing a G to G suspension there.
Or, um, _ _ _ it's really, I guess, technically a C over G, but.
_ The Lord is my light.
Just putting these two fingers down.
So I'm playing my G like this with just two fingers.
_ Is my light.
Which allows me to hammer on, hammer off.
_ _ Right there.
And my, back to C, _ [Dm] _
salvation.
[C] _ [C] The Lord is my light.
And my _ salvation. _
_ Back to that C over [G] G.
Shall I.
To G.
_ _ [C] _ [F] Fear.
_ [C] _ _ _ F, C.
And here's the chords.
_ _ _ _ I'll start palm muting here.
_ _ _ _ Shall I _ _ fear. _ _ _
Alright, that's a C7 over E.
I'll play it [Em] there.
I'll also play it up here. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ Um, what's the voicing [Dbm] here.
So if you take like an [Bb] A7 with your pinky and ring finger.
[A] _ Slide those up to [Gm] the _ _ 7, 8th fret.
_ And then behind it on the 7th [G] fret.
On the A [E] string. _ _
_ Let it ring out.
That's kind of like a C [Em] over, C7 over E.
[C] _ [G] So whom shall I _ [E]
fear.
_ _ [Em] _ _ _ [F] To an F.
Shall I [C] fear.
C.
The Lord is the [Ab] strength. _ _ _
Alright, here's the tricky part.
Took me a while to practice this just to get this into muscle memory.
_ Several quick chord changes in a [F]
row.
F, [G] C, G, [E] G sharp, or E over G sharp.
[E] A minor, _ [D] F minor 6.
Alright, [Ab] and technically if you've got a bass player, let him play this G [Fm] sharp.
_ It's an F minor 6 over G sharp.
So, let me walk through [C] that.
The Lord is the strength.
[F] _ _ [C] F, C, _ [G] G, [Abm] _ _ [E] G, E sharp, E, sorry.
Let me explain that chord.
It's an E7, or an E, [E] _ with [Ab] a G sharp in the bass.
_ _ [Bb] And then to an A [Am] minor. _
So.
[F] _ _ [G] Of [E] my [C] _
life.
_ [D] _ _ _ _ _
_ I [C] love that chord progression.
Oh, it sounds _ so cool.
_ _ Let me play it for you again.
_ [C] Of [G] _ _
[E] my _ [Am] life.
_ [D] _ _ _
_ _ _ And here's my F minor 6.
_ [G] I'm really just [Fm] using one finger here to fret all three of these bottom [D] strings.
And then I'm playing the bottom four strings. _ _ _ _
_ _ [C] So, one more [F] time.
Of [G] _
my _ [Am] _ _ _ [D] _ _
life.
And then, who, [E] goes back to the C over G.
_ _ _ _ _ Who shall [G] I fear.
_ _ _ [C] _
_ [F] There _ [C] _ _ _ _
_ you go guys.
The Lord is [N] my light.
This is a great song.
_ You need to sing this in your church. _
I love singing this with my congregation. _ _ _
