Hi, I'm Moby.
So a few years ago I performed here in Los Angeles with the
LA Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel doing orchestral versions of a lot of my
older songs and I have to say the whole process reminded me how much I love
orchestral music and acoustic music and so in May I'm releasing an album of
orchestral and acoustic versions [G] of a bunch of my older songs with a bunch of
guest [Bm] vocalists and gospel choirs and an orchestra that we recorded in Hungary
and string [G] quartets and it's there's a reason why it's called Reprise [G] because
it's sort of [Bm] self-evidently me doing a [Em] reprise of a bunch of my older songs in
[G] this way with you know orchestral elements, acoustic elements, [Bm] vocalists and
[D] the first song I worked on for this album [Em] Reprise was [G] Porcelain which I
[Bm] guess for a lot of people makes sense as a good first song [Em] to redo with an
orchestra [G] and I originally wrote Porcelain in [D] New York in 1998.
[G] It was at
the end of a really sad relationship, not a bad relationship, [Bm] not a tragic
relationship, nothing [Em] too dramatic but just one of those relationships [G] that has
a sort of like an almost like [D] an ineffable sadness to it and so the
[G] relationship was ending or it had just ended and I was living on Mott Street
in the Lower East Side [Bm] in New York in 1998 and I wrote Porcelain [Em] and originally
it was very [G] simple it was just three chords [Bm] on acoustic guitar you know the
main verse was just [D] A major [G] to E minor and then like a middle eight section in
B minor [A] and
[Em] [A]
[D] [Em] [A]
[Em] [A]
[Em] then I played it on piano [Bm] and added the sort of simple melodic
piano line on top of it [A]
[Em] [A]
[Em] [A]
[Em] [A]
[Em] [B] [A]
[Em] [A]
[Em] [A]
[Em] and [A] then I added some [Bm] very sort [C#] of unconventional
orchestration around these two chords and then put it on the album play [G] and
somehow it became a lot of people's favorite song on that album if not you
know a lot of people's favorite song of the music that I've made.
So in redoing
it [Bm] for Reprise I sort of revisited this process and I went back [Em] and I played [G] you
know the original chords on piano [Bm] just very simple and austere [D] and then I
added the [Em] that same acoustic [G] piano line on top of it [Bm] and then I [D] worked with an
amazing string quartet here [Em] in Los Angeles sort of redoing [G] those same
simple chords [Bm] that I had done with synthesizers 22, 23 years [F#m] ago
[A] [G] [F#m]
[A] [Em] [G] [A]
[G] [F#m]
[Em] [G] and then
my friend Trip came and played [Bm] drums a [C#]
legendary percussionist Alex Acuna came
and played percussion and [F#]
then I added [Bm] my thin plaintive vulnerable vocals and
then I want this album to have a lot of different voices on it like I don't [F#] just
want to have my voice on this album and so I reached out to my friend [G] Jim James
we had met years ago at [Bm] a David Lynch event Jim James from My Morning Jacket
[G] and I asked Jim if he wanted to do a duet with me on porcelain [Bm] and because
he's a nice generous person he said yes and I [G] sent him the rough version I was
working on and about a day later he sent [Bm] me back his parts so now I [D] had you know
the [G] original piano the string quartet the drums the percussion [Bm]
and then vocals
[Em] from Jim and myself
[A]
[Em] [A]
[Em] [A]
[Em] [G] [F#m] [A]
[Em] [A]
[Em] [F#m] [A]
[Em] [F#m] [A]
[Em] [A]
[Em] [G] and [Em] then the most exciting part of making this record [G] about redoing [Bm] all of
these songs was adding the orchestra [G] so we recorded with an orchestra in Hungary
[Bm] and there's just something and maybe I'm saying this [G] self-involvedly of
course I'm saying it self-involvedly because I'm self-involved [Bm] but something
about hearing [D] music that I wrote [G] late at night by myself on cheap synthesizers
played [Bm] with an actual orchestra [G] there's something so powerful about that [F#m]
[Em] [A]
[Em] [A]
[Em] [A] [A]
[Em] [G] [A] so
that's how I sort of [Em] recreated porcelain for Reprise [F#m] and as I said [A] it's coming
out in May [Em] and [A] presumptuously [Em] self-involvedly I hope you like it thanks
[A] [Em] [A]

[Em] [F#m] [A]
[Em] [F#m] [A]
