Start Jamming...
Oh, I like this one.
I was shocked.
I was really [Em] surprised that anybody wanted to hear this.
As you might know, as you [B] might have noticed, I like to put, this is, by the way, this is like Indie 101.
[Ab] Do stuff that defeats your own purpose.
Reflexively, routinely, [Fm] make it part of your own deal.
That like, you do things that [Gb] everybody would say,
you know, that song should probably go on the album, that's a good song.
No, [E] fuck you, it's a B-side.
[Eb]
And it's only available in Belgium.
[G] And I'll [Abm] never play it again.
Yeah, but it sounds like the A-side from the single [N] from the album.
No, no, it's a B-side.
[G] In fact, I'm not going to release it at all.
I'm not going to release it at all.
We'll put something [Abm] live on the B-side.
[F] So, this was recorded during an incredibly hot week.
I went to Paris for this thing [Ab] called the MoFo Festival.
[N]
It was three, no, three, five, five days of recording, two days of concerts,
in the basement of a wonderful place called Mandu, which is probably not how it's pronounced.
And they didn't really prep us much.
They said, yeah, no, we will have recording.
Okay, cool.
Well, there will be room for spontaneity.
There will be recording.
Okay, well, how are you?
Just come and do the show.
Okay, good.
So, [Eb] you show up, and on the first day, they take you out of the [Db] basement.
Okay, this is your engineer.
[G] His name is Bernard.
Go ahead and record.
[E]
[Ab] I hadn't written any songs.
Kimme Dawson was there.
We were meeting [Bb] for the first time.
[G]
[N] She is part of the giant chorus of singers on the studio version of this.
It was recorded.
It was about 115 degrees in there.
I sat down.
I looked at the sign on the wall that had been stolen from some French alley.
[Db]
[Ab] Attention of pickpockets.
[Abm] Danger of pickpockets is what it [C] meant.
But I read it wrong on purpose, [Bb] and it said, attention, all pickpockets.
[G] And I [D] sat down, wrote a quick lyric.
The lyric turns [G] out actually to have been a study for the song, Delauded.
It's the same people.
[Gm] And [G] then Daniel Broto of Refrigerator.
[N]
So, we'll see if I can
[Bb]
[Abm] [Em]
[N] No, I'll carry it over.
That's right.
Didn't
[C]
[G] come here.
[Am] Not the same person [F]
I knew.
[C] Looking [G] roughly the same.
Something [A] hungry getting [F] restless in your brain.
[C] So [G] there I go.
[A] Not the same person that [F] you used to [C] know.
[G] Eating food.
[Am] Fish islands I [F] knew.
In [C] the corn and cloves.
[G]
Where the [Am] oleander grows.
[C]
And [G] us too.
[C] Not the same people that our old friends knew.
And [G] so down the street [Am] you head.
[F] In the high summer heat.
[C] White long [G]-sleeve oxford.
[Am] Pushed up to just [F] before your elbows.
[C] Black horse and a [G] medium length black skirt.
[Am] Eating a path through [F] the dark [C] damp earth.
I hope [G]
they got [Am] plenty of money [F] where you're going.
[Em] In the corn [C] and cloves.
[G]
Where the [Am] oleander grows.
[C]
[G] And us too.
[C] We are not the same people [F] that our old friends [C] knew.
Yeah!
