The Murphy Method - More Advanced Earl - "Earl's Breakdown" chords
Start Jamming...
Alright, now to the interesting part of the song, the tuner part.
First of all, I'm going to teach it with the tuners and then I'll show you how to fake the tuners.
So if you don't have tuners, skip this part and move right on to the faking.
Okay, now, to start the tuners, the first set of tuners sounds like this.
[D] [G] Okay, so we're going to pick the open [D] first string,
and you notice while I'm picking the first string, I'm getting my hand ready down here
to tune that second string down.
So I pick the first string, [G] now I'm going to pick the second [A] string,
tune it [G] down, and then tune it back up without picking it again.
[Bm] [G] Okay, and the notes following that are 3-1.
Okay?
Alright, [D] after that, we do a lick we had earlier in the song,
the double square roll in the C chord.
[Em] [D] Ending on the open fourth string.
Now, our fill [G] in after that is this.
Alright, this is real important, it's kind of a weird fill in.
It's 5-3-1-3-5.
Okay?
That means that that fifth string becomes kind of a grace note to the next tuner note.
Pick the fifth as part of the fill in.
Hit your first again, second, and tune it down and [A] up.
[G] 3-1 again.
Okay?
Now, [C#] let's just play these two sets of tuners so you can hear how they fit together.
I'll take it from the lick that comes in [G] front of them.
[D] [G]
[Em] [G]
[Gm] [G] Okay, now, if you know the song, you can hear this A chord coming up.
The lick sounds and looks like this.
[A] [D] Okay, now, this is the only way I have found that I've been able to play this lick.
You're going to bar here with the index finger across 3-2-1.
The roll [A] is just a straightforward roll.
3-2-1-5.
So that part's not hard.
Now, we're going to come backwards here.
1-3, and 3's got to be picked with your index finger.
Now, the hard part for me is we have to have a slide from 2-4 on the fourth string.
So already you can see I'm anticipating it.
[G#m] I'm crossing over with the middle finger and that index finger's still lying there.
It's quite a mess.
[F#] But fortunately, you can get on that [D] slide, and then the rest of the finger can come up.
[Bm] So slide from 2-4 on the [D] fourth string, an open first, and then an open fourth.
[A] Okay, so again, [Gm] see already my middle finger's getting ready to play that slide.
[D] Now, if you can figure out some other way that works for you, that's [A] fine.
But because you have to play a 3-1 before you do the slide,
there's very little time for getting off and getting back on.
All right, the A lick one more time.
[D]
Okay, that [G] fourth string note is an eighth [C#] note, so there's plenty of time to set up for this lick.
[G] Okay, it's just our hammer from 2-3 on the second, followed by 1-5, third fret on the second, 1-5.
Okay, ready to tune again.
First string, [D] run your tuner down and back up.
2-4, [G] 3-1, and the rest of this is just a strict repeat.
[C] [D] There's our double square roll on the C chord again, open [C#] fourth string.
Finish it up with this signature lick from Earl's Breakdown.
[G] [D]
