WNRN's music committee came up with a list of 20 songs that capture the spirit of Virginia's
community radio station.
We've asked touring bands to choose a song from the list, learn it, and perform it live
on the air.
This is Operation Cover Band.
I picked Jesus, Etc.
by Wilco, and I think it's a really beautiful song.
I think why I picked it, that's an interesting question.
I looked at the list of songs that you [Eb] gave me and I was sort of going through and thinking,
let me listen to each of these songs and sort of see which one speaks to me.
For whatever reason, this one does.
To be honest, I know the album that it's from.
I think everybody knows the album that it's from.
I hadn't really thought much about the song in the past.
As I was listening to it, I thought, oh, this sounds like this is a 9-11 song.
That's what this song is.
Then after I learned it and realized that the album was supposed to come out on 9-11
and then didn't because of everything that happened with Wilco, it's really, I feel like
people have talked about this with that album particularly.
But there's something that, you know, it sounds like a voice from the future trying to comfort the past.
That, to me, is really interesting in this song, just sort of what's going on.
It's so heavy and beautiful and simple all at once.
I think it really fits with Generals to some degree in a way that I didn't think.
The album, yeah, it's a protest record, but it's also, at the end of the day, it's sort
of a group of love songs to remind us that kind of the most revolutionary thing we can
often do is just to be kind to one another and just to do a good and right thing in our own backyards.
All right, you ready for this?
Here we go.
