Hi, my name is Carly Rae Jepsen.
If there is one song that I wish I had written
from the depths of my soul, it's Prince's
Nothing Compares to You, sung by Sinead O'Connor.
It's been seven and [C] 15 days
[Dm] since you took your love away.
I was very obsessed [A] with this song when I was little,
[E] and it hasn't changed as I've become an adult.
My parents were really into folk-inspired artists,
so Joni Mitchell, Cat Stevens, James Taylor.
I think Sinead O'Connor was the closest
I'd gotten to my taste of pop.
It felt like my introduction to what a pop vocalist
could [G] be like, and any time I was alone,
walking the beach or in the back hills of the forest
where I grew up, I was always singing those melodies,
because they're just, they're perfect.
[F] Since you've been gone, I can do [C] whatever I
[Dm] want.
I can see you home wherever I choose.
[F] To me, it's the all-time best power ballad out there.
I know that Prince is the original writer,
and I love his version too,
but there's something about Sinead's voice,
and it just coming from a woman,
I think the vulnerability of her voice,
everything about those lyrics, it does feel that way.
When you lose someone close to you,
it feels like it's the end of the world,
and nothing's ever gonna feel good again.
I think going to that guttural, really emotional place
is something that I indulge in,
and allowing it to feel very emo,
like this is, life's over now, or life's just beginning,
[Eb] both extremes, I really play in those fields,
because I think it's what we feel.
We're shy about it, you wanna be too cool to go there,
but I think in [Cm] private, we all go to that place.
I have gone to many a session, and I'm not alone in this,
I think that happens over time
where songwriters start to really idolize something,
and you show up at a session, and you're like,
you know what we should do?
We should try to write a song, like nothing compares to,
and everyone's like, yeah, go for it, good try.
But it's untouchable,
and I think that's why I love it [F] so much.

all right and when you went ♪
[F] Really like, emo [C] metaphors throughout the whole thing too,
[B] almost like if you read it in a poem,
you'd be like, are you okay?
In the song, it's just so beautiful.
I think the cheekiest line is my favorite,
which is, I went to the doctor, and guess what he told me?
He said, girl, you better try to have fun
no matter what you do, but he's a fool,
because [Eb] nothing compares to you.
There's something like, it could be taken very seriously,
or it could be taken very tongue in cheek,
but I love that that's up for the listener to decide.
[D] Also, I like the struggle of it,
but lyrically, she's always like,
I get to eat dinner by myself,
I can be with whoever I want, I can put my arm around,
the whole time, but then she's like,
but it still really sucks.
[A] It still just isn't the same.

Yeah, I think there are some [Dm] songs
that you would change so many things
[C] after the test of time,
and even with the production of this,
I'd be like, I'd kind of just put it out exactly as is.
There's no changes necessary.
I stand by my choice.
Stand by my [Eb] choice.
