Okay, so welcome to the tutorial for Nick Kershaw's acoustic version of The Riddle.
Now, if Nick, you happen to be watching, hats off to [F] you, sir.
You are an awesome, outstanding guitar player.
For the [Em] fans, it has been really difficult for me to deconstruct his song, [G] but I've finally done it.
[N] Nick, you don't need to worry.
I don't think we'll get to play it as smoothly as you'll ever do,
but if you'll be grateful that we can go into your music and it brings us a lot of [Em] joy, so I'll get stuck into it.
Capo's on the third fret.
I'm going to start by explaining the chord pattern first for both the chorus and then the verse,
and then I'll get into the actual technique of how you do the finger plucking.
Please bear in mind this is a labour of love for those who want to go into the full labour of plucking.
It took me four months to master it, but I was so determined because [F] it's such a beautiful sound once you master it.
So you start off [B] with, in relation to the third capo, E minor.
[Gm] You're a tree by [F] a river
So it's D major with the third as the root.
[Bb] G
All in [C] the ground
A major, and [Gm] repeat the same.
No [F] man of iron
D goes [Eb] around C
And [Bb] around [F] E
[Gm] And his mind [G] is a beacon [Bb] in the veil of [C] night
For [Gm] a strange [F] kind of fashion [Eb] is a long [Bb] and wide
[Cm] But he'll never
So it's A [Bb] minor, G major with the third as the root, B.
Never, [Eb] never find C [F] D
Over [Gm] you
So the verse goes E minor.
[Bb] I've got G
Two [C] strong arms A [Dm] B minor
[Eb] Blessings of Babylon
C major [Cm] And time A minor
F [Ab] major
To carry on
[Gm] And E minor To try
[Am] For sins [Bb] and false [C] [Dm] alarms
So [Eb] to America [Em] The brave
C sharp minor
[Bm] A flat minor
[Eb] [Em] So
[Gm] So just to sing the verse again.
I've got
[Bb] Two [C] strong arms
There we [D] go.
[Eb] Blessings of Babylon [Cm] And time
To carry [Gm] on And try
[G] For sins and [C] false alarms
So [Eb] to America [Em] The brave
[Bm] C minor
A flat minor
Y is A [Bb] minor
G with [E] the third
B as the root [Eb] C major
[Gm] Near a tree [G] by a river
[Bb] There's a hole [C] in the ground
[Gm] For an old man [G] of error
So [C] it's a repeat for the next verse [Ab] and chorus.
So [Gm] let's cut over to the bridge.
So it starts off with E minor.
[C] A I've got B
[Bb] Time to kill G
I actually don't know [Gm] what chord this is.
But if you think [G] of B major, that's the way of playing B major.
So index finger on the second fret
and then bar the fourth fret with the other three fingers.
But just shift down one string.
So you're actually playing the second fret of the B string.
[E] Sly locks in
[Em] So if you have a close-up camera, you can see it's
Sly locks in
Corridors
[Gm] [E] Sly locks in [D] It's B7
and then [G] E major
[G] And now [Em] here's a black
This is actually C major
with your pinky on the
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7th 7th fret
with your pinky [Am] on the 7th fret on the B [E] string
[Em] Blackbird sings
and then C major
That's actually C sharp major.
Biggie pug.
[Am] So bluebird is F sharp minor
[Bm] So this is
This is A major
and [Ab] I don't play the sharp note here
so I just leave the 5th note silent
and I use my [B] thumb to get the [Bm] bass string
and the remaining 4 strings
[Eb] [C]
A major
and [G] then B major
And then [C] heads to the corner [Bb] of the world [Eb] G C
C sharp
So [Gm] just go through it again E [C] minor
I've got [Bb] time to give
[E] Sly [D] locks in corridors [G] without
A plan on yours a [E] blackbird sing
[F] Some bluebird [C] girl
[D] [C] Fares the corner of the world
Oh, so with the B7
lift your finger off to play A by itself
Calling [Bb] of the wild
[Eb] [Cm] Wiseman's child
[Gm] So there are the chords
