[C#] Hi, Allison here.
I'm going to show you how I play Handsome Devil by the Smiths.
So you're going to need a capo on the fourth fret.
The guitar is tuned to standard and there's some chorus and distortion.
So there's three main parts.
Here's the first one.
[A] [G#]
[C#] [E] [B] [C#m]
[A] [G#] [C#]
[E] [B] [C#m] [A]
[G#] [C#] [E] [B]
[G] So there's two phrases.
The first one is [C#] this.
[E] [A]
[G#] [C#] [E]
[B] [G] Now breaking that down, it's the fifth [C#] string, open, [A]
third fret, [Em] fifth string, third fret,
[A] fourth string, second fret, [G#] fourth string, back to the [C#] open.
[G#] Then, open third [Em] string, third fret, fifth string, open third [D#] string, second fret, fifth
[G] string, open third string.
So that's the first phrase.
[C#] Then the second phrase, it starts out the same.
[E] [A]
[G#] [C#] This time, instead of reaching for [D#] the third string open, you're going to go to the second
string open, [Em]
back to the third string open.
[B]
So the only difference was that very first open pluck is the second string open.
[N] Now for the intro of the song, that's all you do, phrase one and two.
But then as the song progresses and you're doing this part one, you're going to do phrase
one, two, and then one again, which sounds like this.
[C#] [E] [A]
[G#] [C#] [E]
[B] [C#] [E] [A]
[G#] [C#] [E]
[B] [C#] [E] [A]
[G#] [C#] [E]
[B] [Em]
Here's the second part.
[C#] [B]
[C#] [B] [E]
[C#] [B] [C#m] [G]
[E] [B]
[Em] Start by barring your first finger, strings four and three, the second [C#m] fret from the capo.
Strum both strings, and then quickly lift the pressure off on your left hand so that
the chord doesn't ring out anymore.
And you're going to do that again.
Then strum again, and this time do a pull-off on both strings.
[B]
So all together.
[C#]
[B] [C#] Then we're going to strum again, [D#]
a quick lift off.
I use my pinky, you could use your third finger if you want.
On the third string, fourth fret.
Again, with just a quick note.
And then pluck again, [B]
and pull off on the third string.
So everything so [C#] far.
[B] [C#] We're [D#]
[B] going to come over to the first fret, [E] second string, second fret, third string.
[B] [G] This is a similar phrase to the first part, where you strum, lift off pressure, strum,
lift off pressure, strum, pull off.
[E]
[B] [E] And
[G] you're going to do that twice.
So here's the whole part two, [C#] slowly.
[B] [C#] [B] [E]
[B]
[G] And here's the third and [A] final part.
[B]
[G#m] Begin [E] [A]
[G#m]
[G] with your first finger on the first fret, second string, and your third finger
on the third fret, fourth string.
Pluck the fourth string, second string, [A]
back to the fourth string, then remove your first
[D#] finger so the second string is open, [B]
then the third string.
[A]
[B]
[G] So, then move so that it's just your second finger on the second fret, [D#] fourth string.
Pluck second, excuse me, fourth, second, [G#m] fourth.
First finger comes back down to the first fret, second string, and pluck [E] two, one.
[G#m] So from here, [E]
then we go back to the first position, and it's almost the same thing,
plucking fourth, second, [A] fourth, second, but this time you don't take your first finger off yet.
Until the next note, where you do, and you pluck the second string open, so that was.
[G] And moving back here to the second fret, fourth string, plucking [G#m] the fourth string, second
string, fourth string.
Put the first finger back down on the [E] first fret, second string, [Em]
and then pluck the [D#] second string open.
So from [G#m] here, [E] [G#m]
so [A] the entire part three slowly.
[B] [G#m]
[E] [A]
[G#m]
[E] [G#m]
[G] So that's all there is to Handsome Devil, just three parts.
If you're wondering about the order of the parts, you start with part one for the intro,
and when the vocals come in, it's parts two, one, three.
And you repeat that, two, one, three, two, one, three.
And you just kind of have to listen to the vocals to really help guide you.
But you'll get the hang of it after a while.
So I love that song, it's really fun to play live, it's a great guitar part, it's not one
of the most famous Smith songs, but I hope you enjoy it,
[G#m] and I will see you next time.
Bye.

[G#] Then, open third [Em] string, third fret, fifth string, open third [D#] string, second fret, fifth
[G] string, open third string.
So that's the first phrase.
[C#] Then the second phrase, it starts out the same.
[E] [A]

[C#] [B] [E]
