Hey buddy, [C] did you hear the news?
[Bm]
[D] It's [G] track review.
[N] Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey,
hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
Hey everyone, Anthony Fantano here,
internet's busiest music nerd.
And it's time for a track review.
We have a brand new single, a new album on the way
from none other than The Strokes, The New Abnormal.
The band is seen fit to announce this new track
and this new record as they are, I guess,
campaigning a bit for Bernie Sanders,
playing an event of his.
We're in primary season, y'all.
So I guess this is kind of lining up nicely
in terms of a promotion.
So At The Door is the name of this new track.
And I'm pretty psyched to try it.
I mean, while I have not been super crazy
about The Strokes' latest stuff,
and I have been more excited and more interested
in what Julian has been doing with The Voids as of late,
I don't know what I'm seeing here
in terms of the title, the cover,
which seems very Basquiat inspired.
I don't know if this is a Basquiat piece.
Looks pretty freaky.
Looks pretty weird.
Maybe The Strokes are really going off the deep end
this time because they have nothing left to lose.

Let's give this track a try.
Let's give this track a shot.
The Strokes, At The [Gb] Door.
Ba-bam!
[E] [Cm] To go sinking [F] like a [Bb] stone.
Ahh!
Wow, I love this.
I love this so hard.
I love this, love this, love this, love this,
love this, love this, love this.
[N]
Look, I love this.
I love this.
I think there are going to be a lot of strokes fans that don't
mostly because
Instrumentally, it's bare.
It's minimal.
It's low-key.
It's a lot of sense.
There's
Not that much guitar
No bass that I could recognize
Absolutely, like, you know
No drumbeat to speak of and it goes on for five whole minutes and that five minutes includes
Couple of verses a couple of choruses a weird lush densely layered
autotune
fluttery solo bridge an ambient outro
so I think there are some fans that may be listening to this waiting for like, you know, is there gonna be a moment we're like
All the instrumentation comes in there's a climax
Something like that
No, there isn't but as is it's still a really good tune.
I like how stern
The synths are and how raw they sound
there's a real like seriousness to it to how bare and
I guess stark all of it is Julian's voice is
Truly what makes the track?
You know, I don't know if I've said this before I
Don't think really an opportunity has come up because a lot of the strokes latest material is just very so-so
but as far as
Indie rock rock music of the 2000s rock music in general, I guess Julian is one of my favorite singers and
You know, this is one of those performances that would give me chills from the strokes first couple of records
struck me like a
I love the way that he
elongates certain notes and there's just still something about
The way that he sings his croon his vibrato
The tone you beg me not to go
that just reminds me of um
You know just very popular vocal jazz singers from back in the day guys like Frank Sinatra and that sort of thing
And and I just feel like he embodies that really well in a rock context
Also, I love that lyric sinking like a stone
Use me like an oar and get yourself to shore.
What what a dark
Okay, thought to put into this track.
But yeah the isolation the loneliness coming off the lyrics in this song
It's it's it's it's hard man.
It hits hard
Just very vivid imagery the cannonball line and the banging at the door line, it's just seems like a
Lot of what's being said here seems like the kind of thing that
You would catch in a daughter's song
But instead it's all being kind of placed into this into this strokes track so I love the tune
Vocal performances is great stunning.
It deserves to be spotlight in the way that it is
In fact, I think it empowers this track with how simple and bare it is
While some fans out there may miss some of the backing instrumentation, which which I hope does show up on other tracks here
It is just a nine track record though
It'll be interesting to see how all of this pans out given the track list is so short
Are they gonna be some really long tracks here?
Is this album somehow going to round out to like 20 minutes and a
Lot [Abm] of questions here looking at this this track list and and even more after having heard this song
everything about this is just so
Strange
For the strokes, although I guess at the time even angles was too
So, you know, they're taking risks and I think it's panning out at the door loving this one tune the production the performance
All great.
It's a little left field
but if fans
Recently have been enjoying the void stuff.
I don't see why you couldn't get into this
So those are my thoughts
Make sure to leave yours down in the comments
