_ _ _ _ _ [F#] _ Hello, and welcome to OnlineLessonVideos.com.
I'm Paul Huppert.
In this lesson, we'll be working on the selection entitled The Swan by Camille Saint-Saens.
In this selection, there are several challenges.
Among those are slurring,
shifting, and phrasing.
I hope you enjoy the lesson. _ _
Now, the opening in this piece after the one bar introduction
by the keyboard begins in the third position, and I'll just briefly go into why that is.
You could, of [D] course, play this in first position,
_ _ [Bm] _
simply crossing over.
The idea here is that we're trying to get the tone quality or the color
[A] _ similar from note to note.
So we accomplish that by actually playing on one string.
_ [F#] _ _
_ You can imagine, [D] for instance, if you had like a mezzo-soprano, it would have a certain quality of voice.
That's what we're trying to duplicate
_ _ [Bm] by playing on one string as opposed to.
[D] _ _ [Bm] So we try to avoid that type of thing.
Also, you have the string crossing.
So having said that,
assuming that you are interested in learning shifting
[F#] on a regular basis between first and third position,
this is a great piece for you to accomplish that goal as far as becoming more comfortable.
So let's begin in the third [G#] position.
We have a G natural.
_ [G] You can check your open G string
_ to [G] approximate the pitch.
And we begin, _ and the F-sharp _ is quite close.
One [G#] thing you want to be careful of is don't play the [G] G. _ _
There's a tendency to play G's rather high.
So be careful that _
that's really a true G natural.
[F#] And this F-sharp
can actually be placed quite close.
You notice how I'm angling my third finger.
So that's a lot of information for two notes, but it gets us off to a good start. _
_ _ _ Shift, and if it helps you,
_ release pressure with the thumb.
We'll usually get you down there a little smoother.
_ _ Release, and then release again.
_ [D] And then cross [G] over.
A little deeper [D] sound.
_ _ _ _ [D] _
_ _ Now I mentioned in the beginning introduction that this is a really good selection to study phrasing, and this is a perfect example.
Think of [G] this either as one phrase, _ _ _ _ _
