It's one of my favorites and I'm not sure exactly why we stopped doing it in our concerts,
but it may have to do with the fact that it's about a young girl running off in a loping
with a young man that her father does not approve of.
So I thought it's time to bring that back.
We always like to keep that on his toes.

Here we go.

There once was a lad who lived in the mountains, ran through the valleys and played in the
fountains.
[A] A [B] merry adventure for the wild and free, around the light and in the green.
Of love he was warned to [E] never queer, free from the chains of his [B] sweetheart's desire.
[E] Many a [B] woman was sorely dismayed, but I [E] knew that they could not dismay.

[B] One morning in June, while out [E] on the water, the boy caught a glimpse of the mayor's [C#] own daughter.
[A] Yet, [E] I [C#] never had seen a sight [E] like the lassie that stood [C#] on the pier.
[B] He rowed back to shore, so determined to find her.
[E] Into the town he endeavored [B] to spy her.
[E] Slowly he arrived [B] at his [C#] father's own door, the [B] home of the girl he had seen on the shore.

[B] He knocked at the door and spoke the word father, requesting permission to call on his daughter.
[A] But the [C#] mayor refused and tried as he may.
The lad was condemned for his rambling away.
[B] He turned in to say, I've lost all to incur.
Once [E] so good a man was her [B] turning man.
The little child called out from the window above, but the lady desired and wished far too [A] long.
[B]
Pray tell is it true that you roam [E] through the mountains, run through the valleys and
play [B] in the fountains?
For [A] it's a love [E] that I wish to be [C#] wild and free.
For a [B] rambler's life I wanted [E] to be.

They danced [E] and danced and laughed and held [B] their heathers.
And love [E] and happiness sprang [C#] from all strife.
With [B] adventures authentic from the rambling [E] life.
