The world reacts to the death of Neil Peart of Rush.
I'm Jon Bowden from Rocky Stream Music.
You know, I was as stunned as you were
when I heard the news.
It came up as a pop-up on my computer,
and I got the same reaction as I do
when I hear a 22-year-old gets killed
because I at least expect that as well.
Even though Neil Peart was 67 years old,
of course he had his ailments
and had problems during the last few years,
we didn't expect him to die.
It was brain cancer for the last three years
and they kept it quiet,
but the world has responded.
But musicians all over the globe
are talking about how he influenced them.
Not a little bit, a lot.
As they say, reputation is someone else's business.
You can't tell someone what your reputation will be.
It's their job to decide.
And they decided a long time ago
that Neil Peart was one of the greatest drummers
of all time.
Former Kiss guitarist Ace Fraley said,
"'He was a good friend,
and when we toured together in the 70s,
we spent many an evening laughing
and exchanging jokes and road stories.
Till the sun came up."
Bryan Adams tweeted,
"'Condolences to his family
and fellow band members, Geddy and Alex.'"
The Foo Fighters released the statement,
"'Today the world lost a true giant
in the history of rock and roll.
An inspiration to millions with an unmistakable sound
who spawned generations of musicians like myself
to pick up two sticks and chase a dream.
A kind, brilliant man who ruled our radios and turntables,
not only with his drumming,
but also with his beautiful words.
Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers wrote,
"'I'm gonna go spend the day air drumming.
Rest in peace, Neil Peart.'"
What a craftsman that dude, blankety blank, shredded.
Rush released an official statement,
"'It is with broken hearts and the deepest sadness
that we must share the terrible news
that on Tuesday, our friend, soul brother, and bandmate
of over 45 years, Neil,
has lost his incredibly brave three and a half year battle
with brain cancer.'"
Jack Black tweeted,
"'The master will be missed.
Neil Peart, RIP.'"
Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau,
released a statement,
"'We've lost a legend, but his influence and legacy
will live on forever in the hearts of music lovers
in Canada and around the world.'"
Drummer Kenny Aronoff also said,
"'Sadly, Neil Peart passed away earlier this week.
One of the greatest drummers of all time.
One of the founding members
of one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time,
Rush.
One of the guys who was rumored
to be replacing Neil Peart in Rush,
of course that would never happen.'"
Mike Portnoy released the following statement,
"'It absolutely breaks my heart to pieces
to get the news of the passing
of one of the greatest heroes of all time.
My deepest condolences to the band, crew, and family.
Rest in peace, my friend.
You will always be my hero.'"
And Paul Stanley of Kiss said,
"'Absolutely horrible news.
Neil Peart has died after fighting brain cancer for years.
His latter life was filled with so many family tragedies.
So sad, I'm just shocked.'
Slash simply tweeted,
"'Rest in peace, Neil Peart.'"
Steven Adler tweeted,
"'Thank you, Neil, for all the amazing music you gave us.
You were truly an inspiration for not only every drummer,
but for every musician.
I will be listening to Rush all day today, in your honor.'"
And the world is still in shock.
We'll be grappling with this.
You know, human beings,
we have a hard time sometimes grappling
and understanding death.
It's such a complex thought.
It's hard to process.
And when you follow a musician
and idolize, respect someone like Neil Peart
for so many years,
he feels like part of the family,
or at least you feel like you know him a little bit.
Because he gave us a lot here and here.
For a lot of folks,
they were saying it was like a John Lennon moment,
a December 8th, 1980 moment,
watching that dreaded football game,
finding the news.
We were all shocked.
I want to thank everyone for leaving their thoughts
on their experiences, their history with Rush.
Keep them coming.
We'd appreciate that.
