[N] The story begins in Clayton Park.
Rob Benvey and Ian McGettigan met each other in elementary school.
I moved to Halifax in 1987.
I was 12 years old when I met them.
In 1988 we started a band called Nabisco Fonzie.
We jammed in Rob's garage.
By the next school year we decided we needed to play some gigs.
Rob and I got electric guitars and Ian was given a fretless bass by his mother's boyfriend.
[F] We recruited our friend Alex Grace to pound the drums and [E] we renamed ourselves The Hoods.
We played the Clayton Park [D] Junior High Fashion Show, [Eb] Talent Show and School Dance.
[Eb]
[Gb] We wanted a show outside of Clayton Park, so Alex's older brother got us a gig at the Shearwater Yacht Club, but it was terrible.
Rob kicked Alex out of the band and we recruited Mike Catano, a young hotshot from downtown Halifax, to be our new drummer.
[A] By the summer of 1991 we had our first gig downtown in the lobby of the Casino Theater.
Over the next two years we played shows with [Dm] other local bands like [B] Jail, Hip Club [Gb] Groove and Sloan.
We recorded our first two releases with Mike on drums, Nobody Famous and John Boomer, as well as our first 7 inch ammo [C] on Cinnamon Toast Records.
[A] Around this time we met Angie Fenwick.
[G] She soon became our manager [C] and she would be instrumental in our development over the next five years.
[A]
[G] Ian, Rob and I graduated from high school in [C] 1993 and made a pact not to go to university.
[Am] Mike still had a year left [G] and we needed a full time drummer.
[C]
[Ab] Cliff Gibb was an adult working at the Agricultural College in Tro.
We had seen him play in a [Abm] band called Happy Co.
with Patrick Penland and Melanie [D] Rusinek and we knew his chops were up to snuff.
[C] In September of 1993 we went on [F] tour with Sloan.
[Bbm] When we returned we recorded with [C] Brennan McGuire, their sound man.
[F] In 1994 [Bb] Sloan's label Murder Record released Smart [N] Bomb.
He signed a publishing deal with BMG in New York City.
Clyde Lieberman, our ever faithful publisher, introduced us to the American music industry.
Here's where things got a little weird.
We wanted money, but we also wanted to be cool.
[Db]
[N]
Laura Borealis hooked us up with Steve Albini in Chicago.
In November of 1994 we recorded seven songs in two days in his [B] basement.
[Ab] The drums sounded great.
[Abm] Oh yeah.
Do the Billy Ocean bit.
[C] [Dm] [Eb]
