[N] Did [Cm] you do anything differently at [E] all having signed to a bigger label?
Was it just business as usual?
It's [Db] just, you know, the records are going to go out there through a different, in a different van?
A lot [B] of it was in USA we don't have free health care.
[Gbm] And signing to a major label allowed us to have health insurance.
Is that right?
[A] Yeah.
And that had a lot to do with it.
And it had a lot to do with [Gb]
knowing that we would get proper [Eb] accounting,
which we never got on any of the independent [G] labels.
And, you know, but the independent labels, [Bb] to be kind, it [E] was communal minded.
It was just like [Eb] everybody, everything goes in a pot and we just continue.
But there was no way to pay the rent in that way.
And I was really kind of [A] interested in paying the rent.
When you're making a record, [Bb] do you have the [E] first track in your head?
At any [Eb] point do you think, right, [E] you write a song and you think that's the opening track.
Because 100 [F]% is, was [G] that always going to form the basis of Dirty?
Because it just [E] wails guitar at the [Ebm] start and says, hello, we're back again.
Yeah.
I mean, [F] in retrospect, I don't [B] recall if 100% was really sort of like,
this is the opening salvo [G] of Dirty.
[Bb] But I think with that [G] whole album, we were just sort of in this [E] place of where
[Gb] we felt like we could do anything.
I [Bb] think the [Ab] record before that, Goo, was sort of our [Eb] first foray into working with a major label.
And we went to [D] a nice studio and worked in 24-track and all this kind of stuff.
And I always [Eb] had this [A] dream of, well, what we do, if we [Ab] do it in a [E] really nice studio,
24-tracks and all this kind of stuff, it'll sound amazing.
But it was just more complicated.
And [Ab] I was just like, forget about [A] it.
And so in a way, [Gb] I think it [Eb] was all about getting rid of that anxiety of being on [A] a major label,
being in a big studio and just [Eb] writing [F] the songs [E] that we should be writing with [Ebm] our eyes closed,
going to the studio and just really clicking [E] heads and just creating this record.
And in a way, that record was really heavy [Ab] for us.
But this [E] song, Dirty, there was a couple of songs in the record that were all about
[Dbm] a good friend of ours who [D] had been murdered in Los Angeles by [E] gang violence.
And he was a dear friend of a lot of [Db] people on the scene, especially around SST records.
[Em] He was very close to Henry Rollins.
[Eb] He was [D] a tour roadie with a black flag and all these things.
He was a very dear [C] friend.
So that was really heavy for us.
100% was kind of written about that in [Ebm] a way.
[Eb] And there was another song on the record called JC that was also about that.
[G] Do you want to give us a quick blast?
[Fm] Yeah, yeah.
So that song, I'm going to put on [Gb] a little bit of distortion.
[Ab] [Bm]
[Ab] [Gb]
[Ab]
[Dbm]
[B] [Ab]
[Gb]
Now that you've been shot [Ab] dead
I got a big [B]
surprise
But I've been [Db] waiting for you just [Gb] to say
[Ab] This after [Gbm] chick is mine
[Db] All I know is you've got no money
[Eb] But that's got nothing to do [Gb] with a good time
[B] But can [Gb] you forgive the boy [Ab] who
Shot [Gbm] you [Bm] in the head
[Ab] [Gb] Who shot you again
A gun [Ab] and a bullet in the [Gb] head
[Ab] A [Gb] hundred percent of my love
[Ab] [Gb] But to you, true star
It's hard to believe you [Gbm] took off
[Ab] I [Gb] always thought [B] you'd go far
[Db] Well I've been around the world a hundred [Gb] times
[Ab] And all you men are slime
[Db] A gun to my head, goodbye
I am [Eb] dead and waste, moody rockers
It's [Ab] time for crime
Oh [Gb] [Ab]
[Db]
[Bb] [Gb]
[Db]
[Ab] [Gb] [B] [Gb]
[G] [Db] [Gb]
[Ab] [G]
[Eb] god, that's [Db] great.
I actually played some of the chords wrong but I know you noticed.
You're like, dude, would you play those chords?
No, would we pick you up
