Tim & Neil Finn in Te Awamutu (1998) chords
Start Jamming...
In 1998, Neil and Tim Finn came to Chiamitu for the opening of the museum's exhibition,
True Colours.
As part of the opening, the Finns performed an acoustic set at the Waipa
District Council Chambers and shared a few memories of their [G] hometown.
We've just seen the [C] exhibition and it's really a great [Db] exhibition.
It's very concise, [E] comprehensive
and [G] has the [F] style and the flair that [G] we feel comfortable with.
So we're [Ab] very pleased about [F] it.
It's a [E] great place job.
[G] [E] So yeah, [G] we'd like to sing a couple of songs but first maybe just say a couple of [Ab] brief words.
For me, I'd like to [B] thank my parents for creating an [Eb] environment where we could learn [D] about
music and be encouraged to get into music.
Because I think it all starts there.
So thanks
to my mum and dad and for [G] your undying and just ceaseless support for me.
Even when school
ends, first started and dad was fined at Rotary for having a son that looked like me.
He never said, [Eb] when are you going to get a real job?
[G]
Most of his friends did though.
[E] [G] And also I'd like to thank the teachers that I had in [F] Chiamitu that particularly inspired
me.
Sister Raynon, who was [C] a groovy nun and she [B] let me learn a bit of loose improvisational
sort of music and really kick started [G] it.
And then there was Chuck Fowler, he taught
me about chords and improvising.
[G] And Sister Catherine and Sister Sebastian, a couple of
really good teachers as well.
So they really got it.
A good teacher is everything really
for a kid.
I think they can really inspire you.
I was lucky with those ones.
[B]
That's good.
[G] I'd like to thank a couple of people as well who were connected with my
musical education and inspiration.
[Gb] After Tim [G] had long gone to boarding school, and that
was Connie Nicholson who taught me piano for about three years.
And she was a fantastic
teacher as most people in Chiamitu would know.
And in fact I was lucky enough to attend her
I think it was her 80th birthday?
90th birthday.
[Ab]
[G] That was not so long ago.
Anyway, she was
a great teacher [Gb] and I got through fondly back at those piano lessons.
And also I'd like
to thank Felicity [Gm] Saxby who was kind of running what was called the All in [Ab] Some Folk Club
in those days and I got to know her and her family and [G] they were always very warm and
very kind to me.
And we had many, many very long and enjoyable hours playing songs out
of her place and at folk festivals all around New Zealand.
And that was the Chiamitu Connection.
Dean and Robin Taylor too, [F] who have taken part in [Gb] the exhibition, have always kept me
in touch with what's going [G] on in Chiamitu.
Although I don't get back that much, I still
feel quite connected to the place.
So thanks for all coming down.
Also thank mum and dad
and the family.
Chiamitu was a very cool place to grow up.
Small town, big [E] dreams.

Well [G] it's the same room but [A] everything's
different.
You [Bm] can't fight the [Em] sleep of my [A] poor dream.
[Dm] [C] You sank [Dm] again in [C] my [Dm] kitchen.
[C] Strange [F] fiction, partial or [Dm] free.

It's [G] going nowhere on the land of peace.
