To Live Is To Fly (Townes Van Zandt) by Peter Rowan chords

Let's see.
I want to play one more song and then invite everybody up here to pick.
Maybe that's everybody in the audience who's going to come up and play some music.
But Bluegrass, what we call Bluegrass, is thanks to some dedicated folks like Chris
and all his friends and the mayor of the town, thank you.
You know, Bluegrass is, what it was always meant to be was a celebration for everyone.
And for a long time Bluegrass was looked at as like the kind of like little baby, baby
music, you know, because different other musics had become more popular, rock and roll and things.
Back in the 1940s and into the 50s Bluegrass was at the top of the charts.
You know, people were selling a lot of records, it was very popular music.
And then it kind of went underground for a while.
[Bb] But it's emerged with lots of young [Ab] musicians, [Gm] young [N] players.
And that's the great thing to see is how much happiness, you know.
If you have a banjo, you don't need an amplifier.
[Eb] [E] [Eb]
[N] I mean, you don't need to, you can express yourself musically on these instruments, the
guitar and the mandolin and the violin, and then play all kinds of music.
You can play any kind [F] of music.
That's what Bill Monroe said to me, he said, Pete, if you can play my music, you can play
any kind of music.
So I followed his advice.
I want to play you a song [D] written by a singer, [N] songwriter from Texas.
You may have heard of him.
His name is Townes Van Zandt.
And it's a beautiful song.
And when I'm done, we're going to play some Bluegrass.
[F]
But Townes, as far as [Bb] inspiration to [F] write new songs, that's what I [A] enjoy doing is writing new [F] songs.
So I'm happy to play.
To live is to fly.
[Bb]
[F]
[Bb] I won't say [F] I need you, [Bb] babe.
But [F] I'm gonna get you, babe.
And [D] I will [Bb] not do [F] you wrong.
[Bb] Living's [F] mostly wasting [Bb] time.
I waste my [F] share of mine.
It [C] never feels too [F] good, [Bb] so let's not [F] wait too long.
[Bb] To live [F] is to fly,
[Bb] both low [C] and high.
So [F] shake the dust [C] off of your [Bb] wings, the sleep out [F] of your eyes.
[C] [Bb]
[F]
[Bb] [F] Days up and down they come, [Bb] like rain on a [F] conga drum.
Forget most, remember some, but [Bb] don't turn [F] on a wave.
[Bb] The [F]
choice is yours to [Bb] make, and time is yours [F] to take.
Some dive [Cm] into the sea, [Bb] some toil [F] upon a stone.
[Bb] To live [F] is to fly,
[Bb] both low [Cm] and high.
[F] [C] [F] Shake the dust [Cm] off of your [Bb] wings, the sleep out of [F] your eyes.
[C] [Bb]
[F]
[Bb] It's goodbye [F] to all my
[Bb] friends.
It's [F] time to go again.
Think of [C] all the [D] poetry [Bb] and [F] picking down the line.
[Bb]
I'll miss the [F] system here.
[Bb] The bottom's low and the [F] treble's clear.
You don't pay too [C] much to think [Bb] on things you [F] leave behind.
I [Bb] may [F] be gone, [Bb] but I won't [C] be long.
[F] [Cm] [F] I'll be bringing [C] back the melody, [Fm] [Bb] the rhythm that I [F] find.
[Bb] To live is [F] to fly, [Bb] both low [C]
and high.
[F] [Cm]
[F] Shake the dust [C] off of your [F] [Bb] wings, the sleep out [F] of your eyes.
Shake the dust [C] off of your [Bb] wings and the tear out [F] of your eyes.
[C] [Bb] [F]
[Fm] [N]
