Ladies and gentlemen, Martina McBride.
[Bb]
One August day in 1975, Hank's spirit of [G] adventure nearly ended his life.
[A] Hank, his friend Dick Willie, [B] and Dick's 11-year-old son Walt, wake [Db] up early [G] to go sheep hunting along the continental divide separating [Dm] Idaho and Montana.
They are 11,000 feet in the air.
[F] Willie [G] stepped onto a snow field, placing his [Dm] feet in the boot prints of Dick and Walt, who have just crossed [F] before him.
He gets [G] halfway across, then the ground beneath him [Dm] gives way.
[Bb]
[C] [Dm] Only a giant gray boulder stops his momentum.
[F] When Hank touches his [G] face, he finds that it is shattered.
[Ebm] Miraculously, though, he is alive.
Hurting and hopeless, [Eb]
Hank talks to his dad about the demons he has fought much of his adult life.
He is certain that he'll never entertain any chance to get life right.
[Fm] Hank has said, I [Bb] felt the despair and self-loathing peel away from me.
[Eb] [Ab] God did answer your [Eb] prayer on Ajax Mountain that August day, and I think he did all of us, Hank.
[Ebm] [Cm]

[Bb] [Db] [G]
I was going around the mountains there on the Idaho-Montana [D] border, and [C] we were [G] descending, and we were way up high, [Gb] and [G] it was basically an avalanche.
I went out there, and the whole thing went down.
Just gone.
I said, I'll never be out of here.
I didn't know how badly I would hurt, you know.
It was a
[C] deal of laying [G] there in the snow and keeping a beat on a rock with one hand, you know.
But I really thought I would not make it through that.
And like a lot of the doctors said, I don't know if you're supposed to count deer or play songs.
You've been left here to do something.
I'm
[C] a son [N] who helped save Hank's life on Ajax Mountain.
I was only 11 years old the day Hank fell, but one look, and I knew things were very serious.
People do not realize just how badly Hank was hurt that day.
When I finally reached him at the bottom of the mountain, I took off my shirt and tied up what was left of his face.
Then I left Walt to stay with him while I went to find help.
Before Dad left us, he told me, don't let Hank [Eb] go to sleep.
Keep [Ab] talking to him.
I talked about everything from football and hunting [E] and how we were going to go fishing that day after he got back.
I sat on that mountain for nearly four hours before a rescue helicopter finally [Ebm] found us.
They strapped Hank to the side of the chopper and flew him away.
I still have a note that Hank gave me two days after the [E] fall, and it says,
Walt, thanks for saving me, Hank Williams Jr.
[Eb] [N] In the months after the accident, the media credited me with saving Hank's life.
But I think we all know there was a greater power on that mountain that day that had bigger plans for Hank Williams Jr.
We have become very close since your accident.
We've been through a lot together.
You are indeed living proof that a country boy can survive.

it's [Am] the end of time.

The [D] river seas are going dry.
The answer stays up and [C] the stock [A] market's down.
[G] And you only [D] get mugged if you go downtown.
[Dm]
[D] I live back [C] in the woods, you see.
[G] A woman and the kids [D] and the dogs and me.
Got a shotgun, a rival, [C] and a four-wheel [G] drive.
Country [C] boys can [D] survive.
[C] Country [D] folk can survive.
Rock a plow [C] field all day.
[G] Catch [D] catfish from dusk till [Dm]
[D] dawn.
Go noodling too.
Make her own whiskey, [C] grow her own smoke [G] too.
Ain't too many things [D] these old boys can do.
Grow good old [Am] amazing homemade [G]

Country boy can [D] survive.

Had a good friend [C] in New York City.
[G] Never called me by my [D] name just Hillbilly.
Grandpa [C] taught me how to live off the land.
[Bm] Used to tell him to [D] be a business man.
He used to send me pictures [C] of the Broadway night.
[G] I'd stand here and [D] sell my homemade wine.
But he was killed by a [C] man with a swoop-sled knife.
[G] For $43 my [D] friend lost his life.
Hell, I'd love to spend some beach [C] night in that new tie.
[G] Shoot him with my [D] old .45.
[G] Cause country [A] boys can [D] survive.
[Am] Country [G] boys can [D] survive.

Yeah, we can take [Dm] a picture of the [C] man.
