[Bb] The type of song that has come into [Gb] increasing prominence in [E] recent months is the folk song of protest.
You have to admire people who sing these songs.
It takes a certain amount of courage to get up in a coffee house or a college auditorium
and come out in favor of the things that everybody else in the audience is against,
like peace and justice and brotherhood and so on.
[Eb] But [Db]
the nicest thing about a protest song is that it makes you feel so good.
I have a song here which I realize should be accompanied on a folk instrument
in which category the piano does not, alas, qualify.
So imagine, if you will, that I am playing an 88-string guitar.
[Eb] We are the folk [Ab] song army.
[Bb] Every one of us cares.
[C] We all hate poverty, [Fm] war, and injustice,
[Eb] [Bb] unlike the rest of [Eb] you [Bb] squares.
There are [Ab] innocuous folk songs, [Bb] yeah,
but we regard them with [Eb] scorn.
[C] The folks who [Fm] sing them have no social conscience.
[Bb] Why?
They don't even [Eb] care if Jimmy cracked [D] corn.
[Gm] If you feel [Dm] dissatisfaction,
[Gm] strum your frustrations [Dm] away.
[Ab] Some people [Eb] may prefer action,
[Fm] but give [G] me a folk song [Bb] any old day.
[Eb] The tune don't have to [Ab] be clever,
[Bb] and it don't matter if you put a couple extra syllables into [Eb] a [Db] line.
[D] It [C] sounds more [Fm] ethnic if it ain't good [Eb] English,
and it don't even gotta rhyme.
[D] Excuse me, rhyme.
Remember the war [Eb] against Franco?
That's the kind where each [D] of us belongs.
Though he may have won [Eb] all the battles,
we had [D] all the good songs.
[Bb] So [Eb]
join in [Ab] the folk song army.
[Bb] Guitars are the weapons [Eb] we bring
[C] to the fight against [Fm] poverty, war, and injustice.
[Eb] Ready?
[Bb] Aim.
[Eb] Sing!
