or [A] put it on.
[Abm] There's one song where [Bb] I actually play the song here and then I do a key change
[D] which is the opposite to what I do in [E] the Beatles medley where I just throw it off.
[Am]
[A] [Am] [G] Okay, see now to play that other [D] song [E] I added mid-range and brought the bass down.
Now [Am] I don't
need that.
So now I'm gonna, you know, there's less mid-range now.
[A]
[Am] [A]
[G] [B] [Db]
[Bm] [G] [Gb] [E]
[B] [Bm]
[G] That's how I would do a key
change going up [Am] from A minor [B] up to [D] B.
[B] So [Gb]
with the Beatles stuff what I do is I put the capo on here
and [A] I'm, okay, there you'll probably [E] find that the low three strings might go sharp.
Okay,
there's a few ways to do it of helping that.
Put the capo on and just push on the strings like that.
That takes the [Ab] stretch out of them straight away.
Just take your palm and push down on the string
with the capo on.
You know, it's the same as grabbing the string and [Bm] going like that, right?
[A] So what I normally [Ab] do is I'll put the capo on and I'll go like that.
[A] It's pretty close.
[B] So
that's a fraction sharp.
So I'll just grab that one string and go like that and then it's pretty close.
[D]
[A]
So [E] when I'm using the capo, particularly on the second fret when I want to [A] play things in
[Gb] there, I've found the [Ab] spot.
What do you mean by the spot?
You mean closer to the fret, away from the fret?
Well, I used to put every, I used to put the capo right on the fret like [E] this.
[Gb] [Ebm] It's a little out.
[Eb] So as soon as [E] I actually put it like halfway.
[Gb] [B]
[Gbm] [E]
So this capo is much more accurate than this one and I don't know why.
I'm just very sensitive to it
and I keep looking through different capos.
So this one's probably the best.
This is a
shub capo and it was a gift.
Someone gave me this really copper colored
[B] shub, [Ab] which is very nice.
But even that one, [A] you've got to be careful how you put it [E] on.
[D]
With a shub capo, [Ab] grab it.
Now push down with these two fingers and take up the [B] slack, then [Gb] tighten it
and it should be pretty [Ab] close.
If you just put the capo on, you'll [E] stand more of a chance of
pulling everything out of tune, right?
So with [Ab] this kind of capo, get it lined up as straight as you can.
Now push down.
[Gb]
Okay?
[E] These are all fine tuning things, but when you're up there
and you're the only one up there, all this stuff is your entire world.
It means everything.
If I'm the least bit out of tune, it's like you're just killing my grandmother.
So, you know, I don't want [Ab] to be [A] not the [D] least bit out of tune.
I want to be perfectly in tune
and that's a big ask [Ab] because this instrument is not perfect, but I want it to be as close as I can
get it to satisfy me.
So when I do the stuff like, I'll just show you what I do with the Beatles thing.
[A] I [D] found a place in the song, [A] so [E] I [G]
[A] [E]
[G]
maneuver the [B] guitar to that position so I can go like that.
If I do it here, you know, so I [Am] maneuver the guitar to a position where I [G] can go, see that?
And I can [Db] just get rid of it [Bm] immediately.
But this other capo, I have to put [A] more pressure on it
to [B] get it wide enough to do that.
I don't want to do that.
I want to be able to just grab it and go, boom.
There it is.
It's a lot of planning ahead.
Oh my god, [A] you wouldn't believe the detail of this.
[E] It's like talking to [Ab] Tom Hanks about getting prepared for [Abm] a [B] role.
It's like insanity.
But these are all things that matter, [A] that give me [A] confidence in what I'm doing.
You see, if I know, okay, when the audience are applauding from [Eb] the last song, [B] I quickly grab the capo.
[A] Now I see how I'm holding the [Bm] guitar.
I'm positioning the guitar.
[D] I can see how straight
I'm going to [Eb] put the capo on.
Now,
[B] I don't want to be tuning and messing around if I've got [E] a momentum
going in the show.
And I always play the Beatles
[G] stuff when [Eb] I know I'm building a [D] momentum in the right [B] way.
Right?
So I get to a certain point now, my mind, my instincts know I'm going to do [B] the Beatles stuff [E] next.
Because I'm reaching here, now it's going to go [B] through the roof.
Right?
People are going to have a great time.
In the next half hour of their lives, they're [Dm] going to be out of their minds.
And that's what [Ab] I want to [B] achieve.
So, [A] I put the capo on, and I quickly check the tuning.
[D] [B]
[A]
[B]
[A]
[B]
[D] So forth and on.
[Eb] I go into, [B] here [B] comes the sun.
And then at [E] the end, [G] I [D] [A] [E]
[G]
[B]
[G] [A]
[E] [A] [D]
didn't miss a beat.
And everything [Gb] happened right in time.
Thanks, brother.
And you see, and that's just that one little [Ab] thing.
How many times have you [E] seen a guitar player throw his capo off in the middle of a tune?
Never.
Great.
