Jam Along & Learn...
But, you know, you were in this big rock band in the 80s.
How did you make that transition from what you're doing here tonight to the squealing
at guitar solos?
I was still doing this while I was doing that.
Really?
Oh, absolutely.
I've been playing this style since I was seven years old.
But, you know, I've played in rock bands, I've played in jazz bands, in funk bands,
I've been a drummer in [Gb] a band many times, I've [G] been a bass player in a band many times.
I wanted to work and I wanted experience.
So I could happily go from doing this to playing with Bob Seger or Chuck Berry or you name it.
Or I could go and jam with [F] Steve Vai, whatever.
I'm open to everything.
And I love to play all genres of music.
I don't say that I specialize.
I think probably what I specialize in is this style [E] and maybe gypsy jazz, you know, [Eb] that
kind of thing.
But [Bb]
the music that I love to play that [F] works so well as a soloist is the self-contained
music [G] where I can play the bass part like this.
[Bm]
[G] And I can bring the rhythm in
[G] and the melody.
[Bm] [Em]
[Am] [Cm]
[Bb] [G]
Man!
[F] You know what I mean?
You can do a bit of that kind of thing.
And then when I play with a straight pick and I play something like Guitar Boogie, I
state [Bm] the melody.
[Dbm]
[E] And then I put it [Db] [B] back in.
[Em]
[G] [E] [E] [B]
[Gm] [E] And then I turn it into this.
[B]
I've [Eb] just found a way of being able to do that.
And then I kind of break off into singing a line.
[Em]
[C]
[G]
[A] [Ab]
I do that kind of stuff.
Then if I [Bb] want to [Bm] improvise, I just do this.
[Gm]
[G]
[B]
[E] I can't stop now, folks!
[C] [B]
[G] [E]
Woo-hoo!
[Bb] And then if you want to make the sound of a wangba, you just bend the neck like [E] this.
[Em] Nice!
Top of the day, top of the day!
It goes snap, snap!
[Eb] And just like that, we've got to take another break.
We'll be back with more Tommy Emanuel [G] on the Music Show!
[Bb] [Ab]
