Before I get Music City Johnny up, I want to play one more piece for you.
It's the Minute Waltz, and I do it in 30 seconds.
I'm low on time, but that's okay.
[Ab] [G]
Well, the boss is here, I can do what I damn well [B] like.
So it was, uh, it was 1975.
Maybe it was 76, I can't quite [A] remember.
[C] But, anyway, it was back when I had hair and teeth.
And, uh, Chet's [Bb] album, Me and My Guitars, came [Abm] out.
[Ab] And, uh, there's a song on there [Db] written by Jerry Reid called Struggle.
And I'll [Eb] never forget the first time I heard that, I thought the top of my head would just blow right off.
I heard sounds, inversions, chords, and ideas that I'd never heard in my [Ab] life.
And I thought, what the hell is this?
You know, just the opening passage [Eb] was enough to boggle you, you know.
[B]
[Bbm] And so I had [F] to learn that thing, and it was such a challenge, because it was so [B] full of things that [Bb] I'd never heard before.
[A] [C] [B]
[Eb] I [C] had
[Ab] signed up to go to Bangkok, Thailand, to [Abm] play 24 dates [Db] in a little country music [Ab] club.
And the [Bbm] only country music club in Asia in those days.
[Abm] And there were still a lot of Americans in that area [A]
[Ab] from the Vietnam [C] War.
And so they started [Db] up a country music club, and the brief was, we want to hear Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and I said, you came to the [F] right place.
I know them all.
So, away we went.
And of course I threw in some Chet tunes [Eb]
in every set, and the guys went crazy, you know.
Just [C] went crazy.
But [Ab] the thing for me was, in those days, there was a curfew, so you couldn't be out on the street after, I think it was 11.30 at [C] night.
So we [E] had to rush back to our hotel [Db] before, [Bb]
[G] [N]
I wasn't going to test the information, you know what I'm saying?
But anyway, I was staying in this little hotel, it was about $6 a day, it was one of those really cheap hotels.
And the air conditioning was either on or [F] off.
So it was Ice Station Zebra in my room, or the Mojave Desert, one or the other.
And so, [Bb]
in order for me to practice, to [G] get out this tune, [A] this is what [C] I had to do for the whole month.
[F] I had to get to bed around midnight, try and get to sleep, because [Ab] my alarm was going to go off at 3am.
[E] I'd get up at 3am, and it would be cool enough [G] outside to take my nylon string guitar outside.
I'd sit by the pool, there's no one around, it's quiet, and I'd have my little cassette player, and [D] I'd start working on the [A] strumming.
And I did [Ab] that every night, and played for up to 3am, and [D] practiced until it was too hot to stay outdoors with them.
And that's how crazy Ted's [Am] music drove me.
And it also shows [Bb] you that if you're not smart enough to read music like me, I can't read music at all.
So I play everything by ear.
And then you [Ab] have to find it, as Jerry Riegel said, you just keep digging until you find it.
And that's what [D] I did.
So I'm going to play [Gb] the tune for you, this is a wonderful tune, [Eb] Struttin', dedicated to Jerry, and brought to the world by [D] Ted.
[N]
[D]
[E]
Just the opening passage is enough for me, I don't need you here [N] anymore, but I'll play the whole thing.
Check it, please.
