Most Controversial Dancehall [D] Artists
Today on Dancehall Lyrics TV, we're going to count down the top 10 most controversial dancehall artists according to our own survey with fans of the genre.
Coming in at number 10 is the only female who has made it onto our list, Spice.
Spice has a sweet persona in interviews, but a saucy one in her music, which seems to be closer to the truth based on her feuds with dancehall pioneer Lady Saw and fellow female artist Maca Diamond.
She's known for speaking her mind and is a sort of dancehall feminist, speaking out about inequality in the music.
She was romantically linked to the then married and now incarcerated Vibes Cartel, and her raunchy lyrics established her as a sex symbol in the dancehall.
It was therefore controversial when she announced last year that she plans to be celibate for a while following the end of her last relationship.
She also unfortunately faced major backlash last year for giving one of her signature raunchy performances after a performance by a gospel artist at a sports awards gala held to celebrate Jamaican [Dm] athletes.
Number 9 is Flippa Mafia.
Flippa Mafia, or Modeler, is known for [D] his outrageous spending and flamboyant displays of wealth.
[Dm] His enviable car collection included luxury rides such as a Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS, a Porsche Panamera, and a Porsche Cayenne S.
Apart from that, he had the unique habit of pouring expensive alcohol such as Ace of Spades and Hennessy on the stage during his performances.
You could bet that if he was [C] performing, there would be a huge disturbance at the show [D] after Flippa Mafia threw thousands of US and Jamaican dollars into the crowd.
Well, in the end, we found out that the source of his lavish wealth was his involvement in cocaine trafficking, for which he was arrested in the United States back in September of 2013.
Next up on our list is Don Corgan, Ninja Man.
Now, he comes in at number 8 on our list for being constantly plagued by allegations of substance abuse.
As if that wasn't scary enough, the artist was embroiled in a murder trial for which he posted bail, which allowed him back on the streets after his dramatic arrest.
He also spent a year in prison back in [D] 1999 for the illegal possession of a firearm.
Arguably one of the most memorable moments of controversy in his career, however, was the incident at Sting in 2002.
During that performance, Ninja Man handed over a handgun to the now-retired police officer Renato Adams, then head of the crime management unit of the JCF.
Can you imagine standing in that crowd of 30,000 people and seeing an artist whip out a gun on stage?
Wild.
At number 7 is the warlord himself, Bounty Killer.
Now Killer, as he is [A] affectionately known by fans, is known for having a big heart as he is responsible for helping the careers of many big names in dancehall.
But his good standing with his protégés never lasts long and are always developing into beefs.
Some of these memorable feuds were with big names in dancehall such [E] as Baby Sham, Movado, and Vibes Cartel.
Oh, and speaking about beef, I'm just going to add Beanie Man to the list as a notable mention.
[F] While not one of his protégés, Moses Davis and Rodney [D] Price had the longest standing beef in dancehall history, lasting for over two decades.
On top of that, he's an alleged woman beater.
Rumors of Bounty Killer beating his then-girlfriend with a hammer sent shockwaves through Jamaica back in 2010.
Number 6 is your favorite relative, Uncle Demon, aka Tommy Lee Sparta.
Now, before we get into the actual drama he was involved in, let's just take a moment to appreciate how much it frightened the largely Christian Jamaican populace when he burst onto the music scene with his demonic image.
Calling himself Uncle Demon and Psycho, two of his most notable songs, he took to calling his fans lesion, like the demon that once faced off against Jesus in the Bible.
His music videos [Gm] often depicted violence and nudity, and he and his entourage were [D] often in ghoulish masks and makeup.
In real life, while he may not have been a demon, he was said to have been involved in the huge lottery scam that exploded in western Jamaica back in 2009.
Rounding out our top 5 is none other than Movado.
This DJ made headlines back in 2005 when [Dm] he merged onto the music scene with his gangster image.
This led him to having several run-ins with the law for purported involvement in gang-related violence in his community of Cassava Peas.
One of the biggest aspects of his career was his beef with Vibes Cartel, [Cm] which sparked the Gully vs Gaza feud, which divided dancehall fans in Jamaica into warring factions.
Other countries weren't here for his violent lyrics and bad reputation, [D] which led to the artist having his US visa revoked back in 2010.
Number 4 on our list is the eccentric energy god, Elephant Man.
Ali is most well-known for his colorful costumes, colorful hair, colorful house, and colorful Range Rover.
His car collection also included a red convertible [Dm] Mercedes Benz, which was eventually seized by law enforcement due to tax evasion.
Now, he [D] claims the title Energy God for his energetic performances on stage, which are usually jam-packed with wild antics.
But he's also said to give some [G] energetic performances behind closed [Dm] doors, too, which has led him to father many children.
He's rumored to have a whopping 20-plus kids with multiple women.
I guess every time he jumped into the club and the music was sweet, he [D] had to jook gal.
See what I did there?
Coming in at number 3 is newcomer, Alkaline.
He sparked controversy the minute he stepped onto the music scene with his alleged eyeball tattoo that covered most of his sclera, that's the white part of the eyeball,
sparking a dangerous trend among impressionable youth [D] in Jamaica.
Now, the drama continued when later on [Cm] in his career, it [D] was revealed that his [Dm] eyeball tattoo was fake and that the effect was achieved by wearing sclera contact lenses.
In his music, he promoted sexual deviance, most [D] notably his reference to anal [G] play in his song Touch You, which was a first [D] in Jamaican music, shocking and disgusting many fans.
His whole career has been plagued by allegations that he is a bold-faced imitation of well-loved but imprisoned dance hall icon, Vybz Kartel.
While many comparisons have been drawn between the two, Alkaline continues to deny any likeness to Vybz Kartel up to this day.
Now, our top two picks should come as no surprise.
Where do we even start on the list of controversy that follows the name, Beanie Man?
Earlier, we mentioned his feud with Bounty Killer that lasted almost two decades, fueled also by the fact that he dated, married, impregnated and divorced Bounty Killer's ex-girlfriend, D'Angel.
With all that said, here's a list of some other times Beanie Man made headlines for his crazy life.
He had a high-profile relationship with former dance hall queen, Carlene Smith.
His beef with Cableton.
Rumors that he killed Jamaican dance pioneer, Bogle.
His feud with legendary Jamaican DJ, Yellow Man.
His homophobic lyrics and public apology for said homophobic lyrics and then denial of that apology.
His beef with the [Dm] Marlies.
His criticism of popular newcomer, Alkaline.
And the list goes [D] on.
It's safe to say, Beanie knows how to make the headlines.
And our top voted artist when we asked fans who was the most controversial person in dance hall is the indomitable teacher, Mr.
Palmer, aka World Boss, aka Vibes Cartel.
Cartel was controversial from the get-go for his explicit sexual lyrics, rising to fame with [Gm] songs like Tech, [D] Picture Me and You and Tick Tock.
Originally a member of the group Alliance, led by Bounty Killer, Cartel left amid controversy when he fell [C] out with Bounty Killer and went on to make diss tracks for all his former [D] associates in the Alliance.
He then began his own group of up-and-coming talent called the Portmore Empire, which was also plagued by internal disputes, with his protégés Black Rhino and Javinci leaving the clique, while Cartel was romantically linked to every female member of the Portmore Empire.
Later on, he became a controversial cultural [Dm] icon when he began promoting skin bleaching, which thereafter became a social epidemic in [D] Jamaica.
He also heavily promoted oral sex and freaky girls, tattoos and homophobia.
He sang multiple songs about his usage of [C] marijuana and murder, both of which he was arrested [D] and later convicted for in 2011.
The DJ continues to make controversial music from behind bars following his conviction for one of his two murder trials.
The fact that he appears to be enjoying a life of privilege in prison is a source of further controversy in the island.
As many artists ask, how is he able to record new songs and remain relevant even though he has been incarcerated for over 5 years?
The world may never know.
And that's it for our list of the Top 10 Most Controversial Artists [F] in Dancehall.
[A] If you liked this video, be sure to give us a thumbs up and subscribe [Dm] to view more awesome videos about dancehall culture.
So [Gm] guys, were there any notable events or artists that we left off our list?
What [D] was the craziest thing you heard in the video?
