_ _ _ [C] Hey guys, welcome to Tomans Guitars and Basses.
Today's video is all about [C#] reggae.
Reggae is a
quite young music style that was developed on the Caribbean island Jamaica.
In general,
the bass sits very prominent in the mix, so you have got a really deep fat bass sound
and a lot of the time the bass line is really melodic.
One of the most famous
reggae artists is Bob Marley, so I want to start with an all-time classic by him.

[D] _ _ _ [A] _ The [D#] bass player on this one was Aston Barrett, who played on most Bob Marley albums together
with his brother Colton Barrett on drums.
So Aston used to play over here at the end of the fretboard
to get that low deep bassy sound, but you can also play over here with palm mute technique to get
this reggae sound.
Both of these techniques of course with a P bass and with flat rounds.
Let's
move on to a reggae cover version from the hit song with a little help from my friends by the

What you just heard was a typical one drop groove, that means that the first beat is left out,
so also on the bass and on the drums and you just have a strong backbeat on the third beat with the
snare and the bass drum [N] together. _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
This rhythmic figure was made popular by Colton Barrett, so here's
another one drop groove by him with Bob Marley and the Wailers released in 1979.
[G] One drop.

_ _ _ [C] _ Let's [N] move on to a bass line that first just uses octaves, then switches to
arpeggios and has some unison lines at the end, so a perfect build-up.
The bass player is Nathan Watts,
it's on the album Hotter Than July, released in 1980 and the composer is Stevie Wonder.

known for its social criticism.
Of course, there are also reggae songs that discuss personal subjects
like the next song featuring Eric Clapton.
The composer is bass legend Marcus Miller.
