[E] You know, when we wrote Hey Soul Sister, it was actually written on a guitar.
And it was a nice song, it [A] sounded good.
We had a bunch of good songs written for this [B] album, so it just kind of sounded like another one.
But it didn't [G#m] really sound special until somebody, and it wasn't me, I can't even remember who
suggested it, was like, man, [B] you know, try a ukulele on that [G#] song.
And I'd never played a [C#m] ukulele before.
So at first I was playing it with a [E] pick, you know, and we're like, no, [B] I mean, it's not right.
And [C#] then I [A] was like, well, let me get online and Google it and see, like, maybe I'm playing
it wrong or something.
So [E] I got online and Googled the ukulele and learned that they play it flamenco style.
There's no pick, you know, with the [G] fingers.
And [B] then the tuning that the ukulele was in just wasn't really, I couldn't get the chords
to sound right for [E] the key that we had written the song in.
So I [B] switched the tuning on the bottom and the top [G#m] string from the standard [A] tuning, just
to make it, make the [E] fingerings work and sound right for that song.
[B] And then all of a sudden that song kind of sounded [E] special.
It sounded happy.
It kind of came to life [A] with the ukulele.
[E] And I didn't own a ukulele.
[B] It was recorded in the [C#m] studio just on one that was laying [A] around, you know.
[B] So I called up [E] my good friends at Fender and [B] asked if they made ukuleles.
And it turns [E] out you have a whole line of them.
There's [A] like four different kinds, I [F#] think.
And I was like, well, I don't know, just pick me [B] that one.
You know, whichever one you think is [E] good.
And I think the problem [F#m] was they weren't [B] electric.
[A] And I needed it to be electric [B] for all the [E] live shows and all the TV [A] promo that we were
about to go do to promote this album.
[B]
And so [A] they customized [B] a handful of these for me and [A] turned them into electric and sent
them to me.
[B] And that's what I play.
What I really love [E] is the headstock.
Because if you, [B] we were just in Hawaii doing some dates [E] and there's ukuleles all over the
place in Hawaii, you know, in hotel [A] stores and everything.
And I mean, this [B] is just such a classic Fender [C#m] Tele headstock, you know.
[A] It's pretty great.
[B] It really makes it [A] stand out.
Hey soul sister, [B] ain't that Mr.
Mister on [A] the radio?
Stereo, the [B] way you move ain't fair, you know.
[A] Hey soul sister, [B] oh.
