I went to this art course when I was about 18.
Me and this guy, Davey Bell, he had a guitar,
and he was [G#] sort of farting about with it, trying to write a song.
And I was like, oh yeah, [N] let's write a song.
So we're sitting up, it's about 2 o'clock in the morning,
and he's got this guitar out, and I'd never written a song before,
and neither had he, and the door opened in the dormitory,
and it was like 2 o'clock in the morning, and you're supposed to be in bed,
and everyone else was asleep in the dormitory.
And this teacher walked in, and we were like,
no, get the proof, get rid of the smoke, you know, like,
and then there's this guy called Jerry Kelly,
and he wanders in, and he's one of these teachers,
and he's just an amazing teacher.
He just doesn't, he's dead cool, and he was just like,
hey man, calm down, what are you doing?
Sat down with us, and so he's going, what are you doing?
He's looking at these lyrics, and he's like, this is rubbish.
And we're like, I know, I know.
And so he starts telling us about, when I was your age,
I was stuck in this little town, and I wrote this song,
and so he wrote it down, it's a song called The Urge For Going,
and I'm like, wow, man, and he played it.
We sat, and we learned the song up.
We performed it at the last night of this art course,
and like, it was kind of like this.
It was the first time I'd ever performed in front of a group of people.
Everyone was crying, like, it was like, not a dry eye in the house,
all the teachers were all like, oh my God, about this song,
and I was like, this is amazing.
Jerry Kelly's song.
Four years pass, right, four years,
and I'm talking to my friend, and I'm going,
oh, we'd somehow got into talking about this song, The Urge For Going,
and she's like, Franny, and I'm like, what?
And she's going, Franny, that's no Jerry's song.
And I'm like, what?
What do you mean?
She's like, did he never tell you that that's no his song?
And she like, put her foot in it,
because like, Jerry couldn't bring himself to tell me
that this was actually a Joni Mitchell song,
that he'd said that he'd written, and I'd been going about,
and I'd been going around to his house, right,
and whenever, when everybody's around at his house,
and I'm like, oh, and get the guitar out and everything,
I'd be like, oh, come on, let's play your song, Jerry,
and everyone knew that it was a Joni Mitchell song, apart from me.
Yeah, so Jerry Kelly got us into Joni Mitchell,
in a sort of a roundabout way.
[G#] We're going to play a song called River.
[A] This is by Joni Mitchell.
