So, I was kind of a dope [G] head growing up.
I started experimenting with drugs and [B] alcohol when I was about 11, alright.
[Bm] Well I just feel like if [C] I put it out there, you know, if you catch me drinking on the way home, you'll hit me in [Bm] the face.
And then I had a real spiritual experience at 24, and I went to the ministry for seven.
True story, by the way, this is not a joke, but you can laugh, I'd laugh if I was sitting in your chair.
I'd be like, what the hell is he doing?
And, uh, so, after I got out of rehab, the last time, I put on my, I [D] just deleted all of my [Bm] bio, and I just said,
I'd often turn into a preacher, [G] a preacher turned into a songwriter, a [Bm] songwriter turned into a drunk, and a drunk turned around and had to be a human being again.
[Bm] That's my bio now.
Enough to know.
So, I was writing with this guy, and he said, I want to write a Jesus song, man.
I said, I don't.
I spent a lot of years writing and singing [B] Jesus songs, and [Bm] I just don't want to do it.
He said, not really, did not think you'd [Cm] know more about it since you was a [Bm] preacher and all.
And I said, [Cm] if I write a Jesus song, I wrote a lot of them, I had some on [Bm] Contemporary Christian Radio, you know, that did real good.
I think I had maybe 15 or 20 in [A] the top 20, Contemporary [B] Christian Radio, before [D] the big fall.
And, uh, the big fall [Bm] being me.
And [D]
[E] I said, if I [G] write a Jesus song, I don't want to come through the front door, I want to make it a twisted, dark Jesus song.
And he said, oh, I like it, I like it, [Bm] let's do that.
So this is what we came up with.
Mama said, good boy Greg, [G]
don't go sleeping in your neighbor's bed.
[Bm] Don't lie, don't steal, don't shoot, don't kill.
That's [G] God's law.
I'll be damned if I [Bm] didn't break that law.
[A]
Now I ain't got [Bm] nothing left [A] but the empty taste of whiskey on my breath.
[D] [C#m] Jesus, friend of [Bm] sinners.
[G] Lead me home, lead [A] me home.
[D] Lord, I'm asking [C#m] for
[Bm] forgiveness.
I've [G] gone, I've [A] gone too far gone.
[G] Jesus, friend of sinners.
[Bm] Won't you lead me home.
Something went wrong, but I don't know where.
[G] I put a lot of gray in my daddy's hair.
[Bm] We caught him one last time from the prison phone.
The day my mama [G] passed on.
He said, boy, you can go to hell, but you [Bm] can't come home.
[A] All I got for all these years is scars and two tattoos.
[A] One says I love mama, [Bm] one says I love [D] you.
[C#m] Jesus, friend [Bm] of sinners.
Lead [G] me home, [A] lead me home.
[D] [C#m]
[Bm] Forgive me.
I've [G] gone, I've [A] gone too far gone.
[G] Jesus, friend of sinners.
[Bm] Lead me home.
[G]
[A]
[D] Yeah, Jesus, [C#m] friend [Bm] of sinners.
Lead [G] me home, [A] lead me home.
Lord, [D] I'm asking [C#m]
for [Bm] forgiveness.
[G] I've gone, [A] I've gone too far gone.
[G]
Jesus, friend of sinners.
Jesus, friend of sinners.
[D] Lead [Bm] me home.
[G] Won't you lead [Bm] me home.
I'm going to be fine.
[G]
[C#] Something went wrong, but I don't know where.
[Bm] [N]
