Howdy, this is for my friend Robert Lively.
He just sent me an email and wanted to know how to play True Companion.
I'm in a cabin in beautiful Fisher, Texas down at the Rice Festival.
It's a wonderful time.
I just got up this morning and I'll show you how to do this.
It's a drop D song.
So I've got the bottom E down to a [E] D.
[F#] In True Companion, the song opens.
Every time it's an instrumental part, the second chord is different.
It's a D.
When I start singing, the chord changes to an A.
So the opening instrumental little finger-picking part is like this.
[Bm]
This little B minor chord there.
I go [Gm] to a D chord.
It's kind of a funky D chord.
There's an [A] A in the bottom.
And then the rest of the D chord I've got.
It's almost like the B minor where I'm holding this F sharp note here on the fourth string,
if you can see that.
So the A is open.
[F#m] F sharp on the D string.
Barring these two [D] here.
So A, D, F sharp, [A] A, [F#m] F sharp, A, D, F sharp.
You see this little shape here.
That's a regular D chord.
That shape is still right there.
And I've got this.
[B] So B minor.
[Bm]
So what I'm really doing is [B] dropping those two B's to [A]
an A inside the chord.
And as soon as I start singing,
Take the burdens of my day.
It's just a regular A chord.
[B] All my worries roll [A]
away.
[A] D, open D.
And I just hit the bottom [D] D string.
And I'm playing that same funky with the F sharp there.
Every day you [F#] are my [G]
true companion.
So the G chord, that's the open A string.
I'm not playing anything on it.
The rest is the G is up here now.
Because I tuned that E string down to a D.
The G that's usually here is now here.
And then open [D] D, open G.
[G] Then D and G on the high B and E strings.
[D] Every day you are [G] my true companion.
[A] A,
[Bm] B minor, [A] A.
Like the [D] sun.
That same funky F sharp there on the D string.
[Bm] Like a, what is it?
Like the dew [A] on a rose you make.
[B] That's A, B minor.
Beauty [A] shine.
Like the dew on a rose you [Bm]
make.
[A] Beauty shine. Yeah.
[Bm] Take the burdens of [A] my day.
[B] All [Bm] my worries roll [A]
away.
Here we go again.
[D]
Every day [D] you are my, I'll walk up [G] there.
True [A] companion.
[Bm] [A] [D] Like the sun.
When it goes [G] back to the instrumental part [Bm] again.
Yeah.
That chord becomes a D [D] again.
With the A in the bass.
[Bm]
Yeah.
[F#m]
[Bm] B minor.
[D] D.
As soon as I start singing again.
[Bm] Like a bird on [A] the sea you bring.
Goes back to A chord.
Hope to me.
So there you go.
That's the whole deal.
You can send me an email if there is something you don't get.
Hope you enjoy
