Hi everybody, it's Avishai again from Piano Freak.
In this video I'm going to show you how to play a tumbao.
Tumbao is the bassline of the salsa and we are going to learn how to play it on piano
with our left hand.
With my right hand I'm going to play a montuno and I'm going to show you how to combine both
of them together.
So stay with me, let's go.
So now let's focus on the tumbao.
For this example I'm going to use three notes.
C, [G] G and C [C] again.
[G] [C]
Now let's see the count.
The first note is fall on the first beat, on the 1.
1.
Like this.
All the other notes falling on the end of the 2 and 4.
The end of the 2 and 4.
So I count it like this.
1, [G] 2 and 3, [C] 4.
1, 2 [G] and 3, [C] 4.
1, [G] 2 and 3, [C] 4.
1, [G] 2 and 3, [C] 4.
All the time.
2 and 4.
2 and 4. Again.
1, 2 [G] and 3, [C]
4.
1, [G] 2 and 3, [C] 4.
1, [G] 2 and 3, [C] 4.
1, [G] 2 and 3, [C] 4.
And that's the idea.
Now let's take another progression.
We are going to play 1, 2, 5, 1 progression.
Which means that if we are playing in the key of C major, the 1 will be the C note,
[D] 2 will be D, [G] 5 will be G, and [C] we go back to 1 to C.
I also can use a passing note which helps me to pass between the chords.
Let's take a look.
1, 2, 3, 4.
1, [G] 2 and 3, [D] 4.
1, [Ab] 2 and [G] 3, 4.
1, [D] 2 and 3, [C] 4.
1, [G] 2 and 3, [C] 4.
1, [G] 2 and 3, [D] 4.
1, [Ab] 2 and 3, [G] 4.
1, [D] 2 and [C] 3, 4.
1, [G] 2 and [C] 3, 4.
1.
[Cm]
And now I'm going to show you the Montuno roll of the right hand.
Let's imagine that we are playing a C minor chord.
Like this.
Then we take the thumb [Ab] one step up to the Ab.
And then let's imagine that we [G] are playing a G chord.
And we take the thumb to the F [B] note.
[Gb] That's the basic.
Now I'm going to show you how to play it.
1, 2, 3 [G] and.
[Ab]
[G] [F]
[Gb] [G] [A]
[Db] [Ab]
1, 2 and 3 and [G] 4 and.
1 and [F] 2 and [Gb] 3 and [G] 4 and.
1 [F] and 2 and [Gb] 3 and [Cm] 4 and.
[Ab] 1 and 2 and 3 and [Cm] 4.
1.
Now let's combine both of them together.
Tumbao against Montuno.
I'm going to play it with [C] my both hands in the same time.
For the beginners it can be a little bit difficult but you should practice.
I'm going to do it very slowly, very carefully.
1, 2, 3 and.

Instead of play the G chord.
[G] Like this.
I can arpeggiate the note of the chord.
Like this.
So if I [C] play [G]
[D] [C]
[G] [C]
another thing that I want to show you.
I can double the G note.
Instead of play [G] I double it.
Like this and I play the same.
